FISU World University Squash Championships 2026: India settle for silver medal after narrow loss against Hong Kong China

The Indian quartet of Om Semwal, Shameena Riaz, Suraj Kumar Chand and Nirupama Dubey lost the final on game difference but returned with their best finish at the competition.

India settled for the silver medal in the team event at the FISU World University Squash Championships 2026 after losing to Hong Kong China in the final at Somaiya Vidyavihar University in Mumbai on Sunday.

The Indian quartet of Om Semwal, Shameena Riaz, Suraj Kumar Chand and Nirupama Dubey lost the final to Hong Kong China on game difference after the tie ended 2-2.

Om Semwal gave India a winning start with a 3-0 (7-3, 7-3, 7-3) victory over Lap Man Au but Ching Hei Fung levelled the tie with a 3-0 (7-3, 7-1, 7-4) win over Shameena Riaz.

India regained the lead through Suraj Kumar Chand, who edged Shing Fung Lam 3-2 (6-7, 7-0, 5-7, 7-3, 7-4). However, the two games the Indian squash player conceded proved decisive when Nirupama Dubey lost 3-0 (7-4, 7-5, 7-3) to Po Yui Kirstie Wong, leaving both teams level at 2-2 but Hong Kong China ahead on games.

Under the tournament rules, a 2-2 tie in the knockout stage is decided first by game difference and, if still level, by points difference across the four matches. If the teams still remain tied, the result is determined by the head-to-head outcome of the first match.

Despite missing out on gold, a silver medal is India’s best-ever finish in the team event at the FISU World University Squash Championships.

India had claimed a team bronze medal in the previous edition of the tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2024.

Earlier, India had begun their campaign in the team event on Friday with a 3-1 win over Czechia in the quarter-finals.

Sandhesh Palanivel Ravikumar put India ahead with a 3-0 win before Karolina Sramkova levelled the tie with a 3-1 victory over Shameena Riaz.

India regained the lead through Om Semwal, who brushed aside Jachym Mracek 3-0. Pooja Arthi Raghu then sealed the win by defeating Tereza Siroka with a similar scoreline.

The hosts then followed up with a 3-1 victory over Spain in the semis to book their place in the final.

Nirupama Dubey received a bye in the opening match before Suraj Kumar Chand rallied past Hugo Jaén 3-1 to put India further ahead.

Spain stayed alive after Noa Romero defeated Pooja Arthi Raghu 3-1 but Om Semwal held his nerve to beat Marc Altarriba 3-2 and send India into the final.

Meanwhile, Suraj Kumar Chand, part of the Asian Games 2026 squad, had already scripted history on Thursday by becoming India's first-ever gold medallist at the FISU World University Squash Championships.

Organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World Squash Championships brought together players from 14 countries and regions for a week of international competition across individual and team events.

Squash is set to make its Olympic debut at LA 2028.
