The Swiss returns to action on Tuesday (11 August) against Coco Gauff, the world No. 4 who beat Bencic in this year’s Wimbledon fourth round.
Belinda Bencic ended Alexandra Eala’s seven-match singles winning streak with a convincing victory of her own at the 2026 Canadian Open .
In their first professional meeting, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist was clinical in a 6-4, 6-0 win inside an hour, 13 minutes on Sunday (9 August). The world No. 14 and 12th seed is into the quarter-finals in style, sealing the result with a ‘bagel’ scoreline.
Bencic won the Canadian Open back in 2015, her second career tennis title, with victories over Serena Williams and Simona Halep .
In 2026, the Swiss returns to action on Tuesday (11 August) against Coco Gauff , the world No. 4 who beat Bencic in this year’s Wimbledon fourth round.
“She’s someone that always puts herself in the position to win the quarter-finals and later on in the tournament, so she’s a great champion and she’s very tricky to play against,” Bencic said post-match about Gauff.
“I feel like I came close so many times but always lost in the third set, but it’s really challenging to play against her. I’m excited to try again and try maybe a little bit different or just challenge her again.”
Bencic won 72 per cent of first serve points and broke on six of her 10 break point opportunities in a masterclass performance. Eala, who had been unbeaten on the North American hard court swing until now, took a moment to soak up the Filipino support in the stands as she left the court.
Elsewhere at the Canadian Open, Naomi Osaka came through straight sets against Canada’s Leylah Fernandez , as a 6-4, 6-4 win set up an all-Grand Slam quarter-final clash with world No. 2 Elena Rybakina .
Rybakina, who reached the semi-finals in Toronto last year, could close the gap to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to a solitary four points should she go all the way to the title.
