PT Sika Indonesia, a leading construction chemicals manufacturer located in Bogor Regency, West Java, has made energy efficiency a key pillar of its sustainability strategy. Producing an average of 53,811 tons of chemical products annually over the past three years, the company has been actively implementing an Energy Management System (EnMS) since 2020 to optimize operations and reduce its environmental footprint.

From Ambition to Achievement: Sika Indonesia Delivers 24% Energy Savings

With a target to cut energy consumption by 20% by 2028, Sika Indonesia has launched several impactful initiatives, including the installation of insulation on chamber sand dryers, the deployment of variable speed drive (VSD) motors, and the upgrade of production equipment through automation. These efforts have already delivered impressive results, achieving a 24% reduction in energy consumption compared with the 2019 baseline, equivalent to annual savings of 12,380 GJ and a reduction of 2,031 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions. Driven by Sika Group’s global sustainability framework and a commitment to operational excellence, PT Sika Indonesia recognized a strategic opportunity to transform its energy footprint at manufacturing plant. Operating a high-capacity chemical manufacturing facility (producing over 53,000 metric tons annually) presented a critical operational challenge: significantly decoupling production growth from energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

To address this, Sika Indonesia established a ambitious decarbonization agenda, targeting a 20% reduction in energy intensity by 2028 and set out to build an exemplary, benchmark-setting Energy Management System (EnMS) for the region.

The project was built on a holistic three-pillar strategy that combines technology modernization, digital transformation, and employee engagement to drive sustainable energy performance improvements.

Sika Indonesia implemented a range of energy-efficient technologies, including IE3 premium-efficiency motors, smart Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), thermal insulation upgrades for high-temperature equipment such as sand dryer chambers, and active harmonic filters to improve electricity quality. In addition, minimum energy-efficiency standards were integrated into procurement processes to ensure that future investments support long-term sustainability objectives.

The company transitioned from conventional monitoring methods to a data-driven Energy Management System (EnMS). This enables real-time energy monitoring, automated equipment performance tracking, Pareto analysis of energy consumption, and predictive operational adjustments that enhance efficiency and support informed decision-making.

Sika Indonesia fostered an energy-conscious culture through employee engagement and low-cost, high-impact improvement initiatives. An Energy Committee was established to continuously monitor, evaluate, and improve energy performance while promoting best practices across the organization.

Sika Indonesia implemented a range of energy-efficiency measures, including boiler and sand dryer insulation, replacement of standard motors with high-efficiency IE3 motors, installation of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), and conversion to 100% LED lighting across the facility. Additional no-cost initiatives included optimizing boiler setpoints, improving production scheduling, enhancing air-conditioning efficiency, and digitalizing production and energy monitoring systems.

Beyond operational improvements, the Bogor site is advancing its sustainability roadmap through water management, green packaging, and Scope 3 emissions reduction initiatives.

These initiatives support Sika’s global sustainability goals by reducing energy consumption, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and improving operational efficiency. In recognition of these achievements, Sika Indonesia received the 2025 National Energy Efficiency Subroto Award in the Industrial Energy Efficiency category, selected from more than 250 participating companies.
