Transforming Waste into Resilient Water Infrastructure
Sika’s manufacturing operations generate cement waste that was historically disposed of through landfill. This created both economic and environmental challenges, including disposal and transportation costs and the loss of potentially valuable material that could be reused in beneficial applications.
The project applies circular economy principles by repurposing suitable cement waste as construction material for moisture retention dams (check dams). After a thorough assessment to ensure suitability for reuse, the material is collected, segregated, and transported to designated project sites in partnership with local government agencies.
By replacing virgin construction materials with recovered industrial by-products, the project supports the construction of check dams that improve water retention, reduce soil erosion and surface runoff, enhance soil moisture, and contribute to ecosystem restoration. At the same time, the initiative diverts waste from landfill, lowers disposal costs, and conserves natural resources.
Building Resilience with Recovered Resources
Since 2021, Sika Thailand has partnered with local government agencies to transform suitable cement waste into a resource for environmental conservation. Employees from across the organization, including QEHS, Production, Maintenance, Logistics, and Office teams, have actively participated in the construction of moisture retention dams (check dams). Through the systematic collection, segregation, and reuse of cement waste, the project has established a successful model of collaboration that reduces landfill disposal while supporting ecosystem restoration and community development.
The initiative contributes directly to Sika Thailand’s sustainability ambitions by reducing waste generation, lowering disposal and transportation costs, and promoting the circular use of resources. At the same time, the check dams help improve water retention, reduce soil erosion, and enhance biodiversity in surrounding forest and watershed areas.Beyond its environmental benefits, the project strengthens employee engagement and showcases how industrial by-products can be repurposed into valuable solutions for society and the environment.
