The U.S. sprinter shared news of the invitation on her Instagram stories, setting up a return to the stadium where she won the world 100m title in 2023.
Sha’Carri Richardson has been invited to contest the 100m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, the U.S. sprinter revealed on her Instagram stories on Tuesday (11 August).
The inaugural edition of the invitational meet runs from 11 to 13 September at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre, where around 360 athletes will contest 28 events across three evening sessions.
It’s a familiar venue for Richardson. She won the world 100m title there in 2023 in a championship record of 10.65, then anchored the United States to 4x100m relay gold.
Automatic entry to the Ultimate Championship went to the champions from Paris 2024 and the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, and Richardson took neither title: she claimed 100m silver in Paris behind Julien Alfred in 10.87, then finished fifth in Tokyo in 10.94. The remaining places go to the Diamond League final winner, to the highest-ranked athletes once the qualification period closes on 1 September, and to one exceptional invitee per event.
Richardson is well placed on that second route. She won her third US 100m title on 24 July at New York’s Icahn Stadium in 10.77, the fastest time by a U.S. woman in 2026, and sits fourth in the world rankings. World Athletics publishes final entries on 7 September.
