China’s rapid military transformation is reshaping the strategic landscape in Asia and beyond. As the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) expands its technological sophistication, as well as its operational capabilities and reach, questions about the security implications for the Indo-Pacific, the United States, and Europe have become increasingly urgent.
Join us for a timely discussion on The Evolution of China’s Military Power with Mr Roy D. Kamphausen, retired President and current Senior Fellow for Chinese Security at National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR).
Mr Kamphausen is a former US military attaché to Beijing, policy advisor, and scholar. He will draw on decades of experience in examining the pace and direction of the PLA’s modernisation, China’s evolving military capabilities relative to the United States, and potential ramifications for Europe, NATO, and Norway.

Roy D. Kamphausen is a retired president of the National Bureau of Asian Research, where he now serves Senior Fellow for Chinese Security.
Mr Kamphausen combines analytical and policy experience on the national security dimensions of US–China strategic competition. He was China policy director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, a political-military strategist for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a military attaché at the US Embassy in Beijing.
He was a Commissioner on the U.S–China Economic and Security Review Commission for two terms. He has led the principal international conference on the PLA for the last 21 years. He has co-edited fourteen volumes in the People’s Liberation Army Conference series, in partnership with Pacific Command.
Mr Kamphausen holds a BA in political science from Wheaton College and an MA in international affairs from Columbia University.
