NCCS-Impacts: Global climate change and the Swiss economy

Extreme weather events are on the rise as a result of climate change. A new study analyses how tropical cyclones, European winter storms and floods abroad affect the supply chains of certain sectors of the Swiss economy.

Extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, storms and floods are becoming more frequent worldwide. If they damage production facilities or agricultural land abroad, Switzerland is often indirectly affected as well: deliveries of goods or services may fail to materialise, be delayed or vary in price and quality.

The study ‘The Impacts of Global Climate Change on Switzerland’, part of the NCCS-Impacts programme, reveals how climate risks abroad can affect the Swiss economy through production losses caused by disrupted supply chains.

Indirect climate risks are increasing : By 2060, climate-induced production losses in Switzerland due to disrupted supply chains are expected to increase. The main cause is river floods abroad, the frequency and intensity of which are increasing.

All sectors and industries are affected : Because of their extensive international linkages, the pharmaceutical industry, the machinery and electrical engineering sectors [RS1] , the wholesale trade and the food industry are particularly vulnerable to climate risks abroad.

Risks relevant to Switzerland originate especially in Europe and Asia : Due to close trade links, climate-related disruptions in Switzerland’s neighbouring countries and in Asia have a particularly significant impact on Switzerland.

The study was conducted by a consortium comprising CelsiusPro , Correntics , EBP Schweiz AG , the Risk Dialogue Foundation and ETH Zurich . The client was the NCCS ; research was coordinated by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN .

The study examines how the effects of climate change abroad can pose a risk to the Swiss economy. To this end, it combines the latest modelling methods:

The researchers used the CLIMADA modelling chain to calculate direct damage caused by climate risks (river floods, tropical cyclones, European winter storms, droughts and sea-level rise) in other countries. They then used input-output analyses to assess how this damage affects Switzerland via international supply chains and markets. The study considered [RS2] two different climate change scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5) to examine both current and future impacts up to 2060.

The analysis covers only selected climate risks and their isolated effects – chronic consequences and concurrent events that may reinforce one another are not taken into account. As a result, the study tends to underestimate the impacts.

The study captures only production losses along the value chain – other economic effects and socio-economic dynamics are not taken into account. This, too, means that the study tends to underestimate the impacts.

Due to these methodological limitations, the modelled results should be understood as indicative, scenario-based estimates – not as precise predictions of quantified losses.

The NCCS-Impacts programme has developed practical climate services for the environment, the economy and society through a number of cross-sectoral studies. These are intended to serve as a basis for decision-making by stakeholders from politics, public administration, the private sector and research when implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. The NCCS-Impacts programme is jointly supported by all members of the NCCS. A comprehensive overview bringing together all the results will be available from autumn 2026.
