Brisbane 2032 sport and discipline programme – update on eligibility process for candidate disciplines

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Programme Working Group (OPWG) has informed IOC-recognised International Federations (IFs) of the process for the disciplines of each sport to be considered by the IOC as candidate disciplines for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. The process provides flexibility in the consideration of Organising Committee-proposed sports and disciplines, reflecting the advanced stage of Brisbane 2032 planning.

International Federations responsible for disciplines included in the Brisbane 2032 Host Contract may propose one additional discipline for consideration.

Other IOC-recognised IFs may be eligible if their discipline was included in the Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 or LA28 Olympic programmes through an Organising Committee sports proposal.

In line with the strategy validated by the IOC Session this June, candidate disciplines can be proposed by IFs in charge of disciplines that are included in the Brisbane 2032 Host Contract (incumbent disciplines) or by other recognised IFs. International

In a webinar with IOC-recognised IFs, the IOC presented the methodology for the new evaluation programme process , which was approved by the 146th IOC Session , and provided an update on the approach to the Brisbane 2032 core sports and discipline programme agreed by the OPWG.

The OPWG noted that the processes which led to the inclusion of additional sports by the Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 and LA28 OCOGs involved detailed analysis and review by the IOC, providing a strong foundation of information for the Brisbane 2032 evaluation process.

The IOC highlighted that this approach is specific to Brisbane 2032 due to the existing timeline and will be reassessed by the Olympic Programme Working Group for future editions.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee has the opportunity to propose additional disciplines to the IOC for consideration for inclusion in the sport and discipline programme. Brisbane 2032 continues to engage with IOC-recognised International Federations on this process.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will take place from 23 July to 8 August, with the Paralympic Games taking place from 24 August to 5 September.
