Kazakhstan ’s two-time major champion Elena Rybakina reached the Canadian Open final for the first time following a come-from-behind victory over United States tennis sensation Coco Gauff in Toronto, Ontario on Wednesday (12 August).

Second seed Rybakina bounced back from a set down, knocking out Gauff 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a final on Thursday with six-time major champion Iga Świątek .

“She has been playing well. It’s going to again be a very difficult match, and we know each other so well,” Rybakina said when asked about the Polish World No. 8.

“We play so many times. So in my case, I feel it’s more again about the recovery after so many hours on the court, and bring as much energy as I can.”

Receiving a walkover to the semi-finals after Tokyo 2020 champion Belinda Bencic withdrew injured from their quarter-final, Gauff faced a tough start against Rybakina.

The North American fourth seed survived three break points and converted one of her own late in the first set to take the lead over her opponenet under the lights at the WTA 1000 hard-court tournament.

But Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open champion, found her rhythm in the second set, breaking at 3-2, before converting another break-point opportunity to force a decider.

Under pressure and losing control of the contest, Gauff stuttered in the final set, as Rybakina broke her serve twice again, closing out the victory in exactly two hours.

With victories over Naomi Osaka and Gauff, Rybakina has claimed multiple comeback wins at a single event against Top 20 opponents for the second time in her career.

The World No. 2 will bid for her third title this season in Thursday’s final, having won the first major of the year in Melbourne and the WTA 500 event in Stuttgart, Germany.
