Arshad is currently training in Lahore while awaiting his visa to travel to South Africa, where he will work with coach Terseus Liebenberg and local trainers in Potchefstroom.

Reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem will skip the Lausanne Diamond League 2026 on August 21 and undergo a two-week training stint in South Africa instead as he looks to regain form ahead of next month’s Asian Games .

The Pakistani javelin ace was initially included in the entry list for the Lausanne meet alongside two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and former world champion Anderson Peters but has opted to withdraw after a difficult start to his 2026 athletics season .

The 29-year-old Arshad is yet to breach the 80m mark this year. He started the year with a ninth place finish at the Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern in June with a best throw of 78.47m.

He endured another disappointing outing at the Commonwealth Games , where he failed to qualify for the final three rounds and finished ninth with a best effort of 77.41m.

Arshad Nadeem’s long-term coach Salman Butt said the Pakistani javelin thrower has decided to prioritise training over competition as he prepares for the Asian Games 2026 .

“He has decided against competing in the Diamond League meet this month as he wants to be ready for the Asian Games,” Butt said.

Arshad Nadeem is currently training in Lahore while awaiting his visa to travel to South Africa, where he will work with coach Terseus Liebenberg and local trainers in Potchefstroom.

The training base holds fond memories for Arshad Nadeem. He previously completed two stints in Potchefstroom before going on to win gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Paris 2024 .

After his South Africa camp, Arshad Nadeem is expected to return to competition at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, which is scheduled from September 11 to 13, before turning his attention to the Asian Games.
