Two-time European champion Dina Asher-Smith and newly crowned 100 metres champion Amy Hunt will renew their rivalry in Thursday's (13 August) women's 200m final at the 2026 European Athletics Championships after both cruised through their semi-finals in Birmingham. Asher-Smith, who won the European 200m title in 2016 and 2018 , looked comfortable as she won the opening semi-final in 22.49 seconds . "I had fun," she said afterwards. "Whenever you get to run at a home championships, it’s always a magical moment you’re going to treasure. There were so many talented and hard-working women on the line with me, so I had to make sure I had earned my spot and then beyond that I’m happy to have qualified.” Hunt, meanwhile, produced the fastest time of the semi-finals, easing to victory in the second heat in 22.37 . "I feel like it went really well," Hunt reflected. "The plan was to really hit the first 150m hard to practise for tomorrow, because that's something I haven't been doing so far in my 200m races this year. I got rid of everyone by 150m so I was trying to look at the board, to se how far back everyone was to kind of judge my effort and just be as smart as possible." The two Britons are now chasing different pieces of European Championships history. Victory for Hunt would make her the first woman since Asher-Smith in 2018 to complete the European 100m and 200m double . Asher-Smith, meanwhile, is bidding to become the first woman to win the European Championships 200m title three times . Their most recent meeting came at the London Diamond League in July, where Asher-Smith edged Hunt by just 0.02 seconds . Great Britain will have three athletes in the final , with Success Eduan , the reigning European U23 200m champion, also qualifying. Eduan has been in impressive form this season and recorded the third-fastest time by a European woman in 2026 when she clocked 22.43 to beat Hunt at the British Athletics Championships in June. But the British trio will have plenty of opposition. Republic of Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke won the third semi-final in 22.43 and will enter the final as one of the strongest contenders for the podium. Switzerland's Fabienne Hoenke also poses a threat after setting a personal best of 22.50 in July. In the absence of defending champion Mujinga Kambundji, who is still working her way back to top form after giving birth last year, the Swiss will be hoping to keep the 200m title in their country for a third consecutive edition. Spain's Jael Bestué will also be among those looking to disrupt the British challenge. France's Gemima Joseph, and seven-time Hungarian champion Boglárka Takács complete the 200m final line-up.
