Katie Ledecky, United States’ nine-time Olympic gold medallist, took control of the race in the last 100m.
Katie Ledecky , one of swimming ’s all-time greats, stormed to victory in the women’s 1500m freestyle final at the 2026 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on Wednesday (12 August).
Competing at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Centre in Irvene, California, the nine-time Olympic gold medallist touched the line in 15 minutes, 36.09 seconds , celebrating her first major international win in the United States.
The victory also extended her 16-year win streak in the 1500m freestyle.
“Even with a swim I’m not super happy with, it’s just so much fun to be in this environment and get to experience this," Ledecky said, according to NBC Sports .
The USA star, who holds the world record of 15:20.48 over the distance, finished 2.53 seconds ahead of Australia’s Lani Pallister , who won the silver medal, just a couple of hours after taking gold in the women’s 200m freestyle .
Pallister’s Australian compatriot Moesha Johnson came third with a timing of 15:53.49.

Ledecky: ‘I know I have more in me’
The Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 champion in the 1500m free, Ledecky was locked in a tight battle with Pallister in the first 400m but controlled the pace midway through the race.
The North American swimmer, then, established a stronger lead and lifted in the final 100m to clinch victory in her closest 1500m free race at a major international meet in 13 years.
“It was ok,” Ledecky said, according to Swimming World Magazine .
“We took it out pretty fast and I expected it because that’s what Lani did last year (at the World Championships). I didn’t have the back end I wanted but… I don’t want to read too much into the final time.
“I know I have more in me.”
Pallister’s time was her lifetime best, making her the third-fastest woman in history. It also marked a new Australian and Oceanian record, taking half a second off the 15:39.14 she recorded at the Australian Trials in 2025.
Pallister will be back in the pool for the 800m freestyle, while Ledecky is set to compete in the 400m and 800m free events at the championships, which are taking place from 12 to 15 August.
