The United States settled for bronze. The Venezuelan Volleyball Federation has been allocated a total of USD 72,500 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support, a large portion of which was tagged to their national teams in volleyball, working under Argentinean coach Ruben Wolochin. In addition, USD 45,500 in volleyball equipment has been granted. Volleyball Canada has been funded with a total of USD 1,702,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams, USD 75,000 in volleyball equipment, and another USD 12,000 in knowledge transfer programs. Their men’s national volleyball teams have been benefitting from the expertise of coach David Preston. At the U17 Boys’ Volleyball Pan American Cup played at the Domo Polideportivo in the Guatemalan capital, Venezuela cruised through their three Pool A matches against Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala without dropping a single set. In their semifinal, they produced another sweep, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) against Pool B runners-up USA, and in the gold medal showdown (pictured in the main photo; source: norceca.net) against Canada, they completed their immaculate quest with yet another shutout – 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) – to triumph as champions. Canada finished third in Pool B on points after beating Puerto Rico and USA in four sets each and losing to Mexico in straight sets. They advanced to the quarterfinals, where they shut out Costa Rica. In the semifinals, the Canadian boys got back at Mexico with a hard-fought 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 15-10) victory to secure their spot on the podium. The United States claimed the bronze after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) sweep of the third-place match against Mexico. Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras, in that order, lined up in the places from fourth to eighth in the final standings. Venezuela’s 16-year-old opposite Diego Rondon was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and recognized on the U17 Boys’ Volleyball Pan American Cup Dream Team, which also featured setter Julio Calles (Venezuela), outside hitters Benjamin Garcia (Venezuela) and Francisco Merino (Mexico), middle blockers Liam Bendavid (Canada) and Edwin Guity (Honduras), and libero Adrian Figueroa (Puerto Rico). Figueroa was also honored as Best Receiver. The Best Scorer award was earned by Canada’s Julian Josephs. The other two individual awards went to Venezuelan players – Calles for Best Server and Jhonny Gonzalez for Best Digger.
