The Boys in Brown missed out on their first away win of the season late on, drawing 2-2 at Holstein Kiel. Despite the disappointment of conceding the equaliser at the death, there was satisfaction with the performance as a whole.
Head coach Marcel Rapp : “We got off to a good start and had a huge chance through Martijn Kaars that we didn’t put away. It went back and forth a bit after that. Both teams had chances and we scored twice, but then we conceded after half-time. The game turned when we had two chances to make it 3–1. If we’d done that, we’d have won the match. Kiel then threw everyone forward and made it 2–2. We’re a bit disappointed because more was possible. The lads gave their all and executed things well. We’re happy with that. We’re not happy with the result, but we have to accept it and move on.”
David Nemeth : “We sat too deep towards the end and didn’t push forward as much as we did in the first half. Kiel put in some good crosses and we should have defended them better. In the run-up to the 2–2 I lost the header – I should have done better there. The ball was hit long to the back post, which is not easy to defend, but I need to have a more open body shape so I can clear it. All in all, we made better use of our chances today. We had chances last week as well but didn’t make the most of them. We brought energy to the pitch, which maybe we lacked a bit in the first game. We’ve played two games now and conceded goals we didn’t want to concede. We have to put a stop to that and defend better.”
Martijn Kaars : “We led 2–0 and then conceded a bit too early and with five minutes left it was 2–2. When you’re two goals up, it obviously shouldn’t go that way. After the restart we wanted to keep to the plan we had in the first half, but in football that’s always hard. The weather made it really tough and both teams were very tired by the end. We worked it really well for my header in the second half, but the goalkeeper made a great save. If we’d got the third goal there, we’d have won the match. I’m not satisfied with getting a goal because it wasn’t enough to win the match. It would have been different if we’d won 2–1. I had three big chances and got it right twice and wrong once.”
Louis Oppie : “We stopped playing our game after we took the lead. Instead, we sat back and let Kiel dictate the play. We gave the ball away a lot and couldn’t get back into our patterns, which gave them the initiative. Just before half-time I had some space and went for the near post, but the keeper got his hand up fast to make the save. We’ll focus on the positives, though. If you look at the two games, you’ll see that they turn when we let the opposition get the upper hand. If we’d kept our discipline for the full 90 minutes, we could have taken six points.”
Tim Walter (Holstein Kiel head coach) : “We gave a few presents away again today and found ourselves 2–0 down even though we dominated the game. The scoreline was a bit hard to fathom, but we accepted it. Mistakes happen and are only human. They happen all the time and we can’t stop them. We gave away lots of chances today, but we fought our way back because we had good team spirit. We had good energy and threw everything at it and managed to turn the game round near the end. Overall, we dominated today but we need to score goals ourselves instead of setting them up for the opposition.”
