European Athletics Championships 2026: Mondo Duplantis in Birmingham - “Doing a world record will be the cherry on top. Let’s do it”

The Swedish athletics star breezed through the qualifying round ahead of the pole vault final on Sunday (16 August), as he aims for a fourth consecutive European title.

Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis cut a relaxed figure on his first day at Birmingham 2026, needing just one jump to clear the qualifying round and make Sunday’s (16 August) men’s pole vault final at the European Championships of Birmingham 2026 .

A single clearance of 5.60m saw him begin his attempt to become a four-time consecutive European champion, should he come out on top on Sunday.

Despite withdrawing from the London Diamond League last month, in a season that saw his first second-place finish in three years, the expectation on the Swede has not dimmed.

“I was a bit tight a few weeks ago (in London),” Duplantis told Olympics.com. “It’s been really stressful; I’ve worked really hard and there was a lot to do to get ready for this championship.

“Qualifying is always a little stressful in the field; you always feel a bit tense as you only have something to lose and nothing to win. But I felt good in my body. It really feels like I’m ready for the final; I’m confident. Now it’s just time to show it.”

Earlier this year, Duplantis stated his intentions for a world record attempt; the European Championships are the only major competition he has not yet set one in.

“Doing a world record is always just the cherry on top ,” Duplantis said on Friday.

“I don't even get nervous . It's more like I won the competition, and whatever happens after that is really nice.

"Let's do it. I'm expecting it to be a great final, and given today's crowd I am sure it will be great with people cheering us on.”
