British cyclist Finlay Tarling dies in serious accident at Tour of Portugal

The 19-year-old rider from the NSN Development Team was reportedly hit by a vehicle going the wrong way during the eighth stage of the race.

British road cyclist Finlay Tarling has died in what race organisers called a “serious accident” which marred the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal 2026 stage race on Friday (14 August).

The 19-year-old was killed in the accident which involved a car driving on the wrong side of the road on National Route 306 in the Ponte de Lima region, according to local reports in Correio da Manhã .

Tarling was immediately attended to by emergency services but did not survive his injuries. A native of Wales, he was the younger brother of Olympian Josh Tarling , the European 2023 time trial champion.

“At this moment of profound sorrow, the organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones,” read a statement issued by the Volta a Portugal.

The stage was neutralised following news of the accident, with the peloton reaching its intended destination of Fafe together as one and safely without further incident.

“The organisation will provide further information as soon as conditions allow,” race organisers added.

António José Seguro, the President of Portugal, said in a statement: “The President of the Republic offers his deepest condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates at NSN Development Team, and to the entire cycling community, joining in their grief with deep emotion.”
