Reigning European champions Italy became the first team to secure an Olympic quota to the men’s flag football tournament at LA28, where they will join hosts United States. Canada and Mexico will battle it out for the second quota available at the 2026 Worlds in the bronze medal match.
Italy’s Andrea Fantin knows he has to get a good night’s sleep before his team plays in the final of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships , but he admits a healthy sleep routine will be harder to stick to than usual.
Italy became the first team to qualify for the men’s flag football tournament at Los Angeles 2028 , where the sport will be making its Olympic debut, after beating Canada 41-36 in the semi-final in Düsseldorf, Germany on Saturday (15 August).
“We’re going to bed like the other days because the most important game is always the one after that, but we’ll definitely go to bed with a smile up to here ,” Fantin told Olympics.com, gesturing with hand extending to the top of his 196cm frame.
Six-time world champions United States, who Italy will play for the 2026 world title , are also among the men’s six men’s teams who will compete at LA28, having automatically secured their spot as the Olympic hosts.
Flag football was not an Olympic sport when Fantin started playing so helping to secure a quota for his nation* brought back a lot of nostalgia for the 24-year-old.
“I never would have imagined that I would get to this point,” Fantin said. “When I started to play football, I started partially because of the game and partially because I wasn’t in love with any other sport that I used to play. Now being here is a bit… I cried all the tears I had , so now it’s strange to even think about it.
“I think these are the greatest emotions I have experienced in my life. I have no doubt about it, because it has been an incredible year for our whole team, we have worked a lot,” he continued. “We’ve always wanted it and now we’re where we want it to be.”
*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective teams at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the LA Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at LA28.

How to qualify for flag football at LA28 Olympics: The qualification system explained
The Italian women’s team, families and friends cheered Italy on to a semifinal victory and Olympic quota at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
The European champions were neck-and-neck with Canada for much of the first half. Italy’s Jared Gerbino was especially prolific with two touchdowns but Canada stood firm, eager to secure a quota and thus join the Canadian women’s team who booked a ticket a few hours prior with a win over world No. 1 Mexico.
They came close to matching their success, but ultimately fell just short off the mark.
A series of incomplete passes made Canada drop to 12-22 at half-time and while they managed to narrow the gap at the start of the second half, Italy fiercely protected their lead. An Italian surge in their last attack put them firmly above the Canadians, 41-36.
It was then that the Italians finally allowed themselves to celebrate, embracing each other on the pitch and then rushing to the stands to loud cheers from spectators who were waving Italian flags.
“We didn’t say anything. I just cried and hugged people,” Fantin recalled. “The crowd was crazy. As soon as we had time, we went to hug people in the crowd because they supported us the whole game, but not just in this game. During the whole tournament they were incredible. It was really a thrill.”
When the commotion died down and the field emptied, some were left sitting on the grass at dusk, phones in their hands, as they shared the news to their families loved ones back home.
And when the sun set on this magical night, they came together again to leave the playing grounds as one, onwards to their next goal: a first world title.
“ We’re a great family ,” Fantin said. “We’ve always fought for our teammates. We’ve helped each other, we’ve cared for other on and off the field. I’ve probably spent the best moments of my life with this team, so this is incredible.”
Mexico took the lead in their semifinal against United States, challenging the long-standing flag football order.

While the Italians left the field celebrating, Canada had a much rougher night. Not only did they lose a chance to play for gold, but even the possibility of playing for an Olympic quota was nearly snatched from them.
Their fate depended on the outcome of the second semi-final between USA and Mexico taking place on the field opposite. If the tournament favourites USA won, Canada would play for bronze – and an Olympic quota – against Mexico.
But that predictable scenario evaporated as Mexico kept the score close and went five points into the lead in the second half thanks to Diego Arvizu ’s touchdown and Victor Balderramos ’ two-point conversion.
USA managed to come back to win the game 42-40 , but the numerous USA supporters in the stands were left visibly rattled.
For the world No. 1 team, it was a third game at the 2026 Worlds where their favourite status came under significant pressure. First, world debutants American Samoa handed USA their first loss in 14 years in the group stage, while in the quarter-final they trailed Japan multiple times during the game by as many as nine points.
But while the tight games were unexpected, quarterback Darrell Doucette said they would only make his team more dangerous when they battle Italy for a seventh world title.
“It made us stronger as a team, going through adversity , facing adversity,” Doucette told Olympics.com. “If we didn’t see that in pool play, we may not have been able to win these past two games that we played in the quarter-final and semi-final, so overall, it made us a better team.”
Mexican players also stood defiant, lamenting the loss of a possible gold medal, but also taking confidence from their tight semi-final.
“We fought until the end , until the last second,” Mexico’s defensive back Alonso Gaxiola told Olympics.com. “In the end it is about the union, that we stood united and fought until the final minute. That’s what I can take away from this game.”
