Former champion PV Sindhu and India's top doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy - Chirag Shetty will lead the home challenge at the BWF World Championships 2026 , which gets underway in New Delhi on Monday. The BWF World Championships , held annually except in Olympic years, returns to India after a 17-year gap since Hyderabad hosted the tournament in 2009. The championships offer the highest number of badminton ranking points, alongside the Olympics. The 30th edition of the badminton tournament will be held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, with India fielding two entries in each of the men's and women's singles and doubles events, and three in mixed doubles. Matches from the World Badminton Championships 2026 will be available to watch on live streaming and telecast in India. Two-time Olympic medallist and ninth seed PV Sindhu heads into the tournament in top form, having won the Japan Open last month. PV Sindhu is a five-time World Championships medallist – one gold, two silver and two bronze. Should she win her first two matches, the Indian badminton player could face world No. 3 Wang Zhi Yi of the People's Republic of China in the pre-quarterfinal. Unnati Hooda is the other Indian representative in the women's singles. In the men's doubles, Asian Games champions and fifth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will look to carry their form from the Singapore Badminton Open – a BWF Super 750 event – which the duo won in May. The Indian pair are two-time BWF World Championships bronze medallists from Tokyo 2022 and Paris 2025. The men's singles charge will be in the hands of 14th seed Lakshya Sen , a bronze medallist at the 2021 BWF World Championships, and Ayush Shetty Ayush, however, has been handed the toughest opening-round match among the Indian contingent after drawing reigning world champion and top seed Shi Yuqi of China. Incidentally, this is the second year in a row that an Indian player has been handed a first-round draw against Shi Yuqi after Lakshya Sen squared off against the Chinese shuttler in the opening round in 2025. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will carry India's hopes in the women's doubles while the mixed doubles event will see the country field three pairs - the most among the five events. Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will lead India's challenge in the mixed doubles. India have won a total of 15 medals - one gold, four silver and 10 bronze in the BWF World Championships in the past.
