European Gymnastics Championships 2026: WG2 wins women's team title in Zagreb with Italy second and France third

World Gymnastics 2 led from the first apparatus with Italy, France, Germany and Great Britain also vying for the podium at the Croatia-hosted championships.

World Gymnastics 2, led by all-around champion Angelina Melnikova, secured the team title at the European Championships in Women's Artistic Gymnastics on Sunday (16 August) to conclude the four-day event.

WG2 scored 165.430 to claim gold, while Italy secured silver with 161.796 ahead of France (159.263).

The first rotation of the day and it was difficult to know where to look such was the quality of gymnastics on display. Each apparatus featured two countries in the eight-team final with nation's alternating performers.

France's breakout star Elena Colas performed beautifully on beam, the apparatus on which the 16-year-old is the new European champion. Meanwhile, all-around gold medallist Angelina Melnikova performed a stunning double twisting Yurchenko vault to get the WG2 team off to a flying start and into the lead on the medal table from the first apparatus until the last.

Third-place qualifiers Great Britain had a challenging time on uneven bars as Ruby Evans , who replaced the Paris 2024 Olympic finalist on the apparatus Becky Downie who was a late withdrawal, fell on her Gienger somersault.

Germany were competing alongside the Brits and the new uneven bars champion of Europe, Helen Kevric , stepped up to achieve another huge mark of 14.700 to help her team into second ahead of Italy who had started with WG2 on vault. Despite their tricky start, GB finished the first rotation in fourth with France, who were on beam and also counted fantastic routines as well as a fall, in fifth.

The second rotation saw WG2 extend their lead with Anna Kalmykova the pick of the bar routines, scoring 14.366. Italy overtook the German side and headed into second place after a strong showing from the silver and bronze medallists on the uneven bars from this championships, Elisa Iorio and Giulia Perotti , respectively, who both scored over 14. Germany stayed in the medal positions with Pauline Schaefer-Betz showcasing a poised beam routine to score 13.600 while France rose a place ahead of the Brits, with a huge 14.600 on uneven bars from Colas, to roars of delight from her team-mates.

Elena Colas makes difference for France

Rotation three and WG2 extended their lead after a solid showing on beam. France's Lorette Charpy made sure to save every tenth with a perfect landing on her full-twisting Yurchenko vault to help her nation into the top three by rotation's end. Manila Esposito , the Olympic bronze medallist on beam from Paris and continental champion here, plus 16-year-old Perrotti and July Marano navigated the nervy beam with clean routines, cheering each other along with every step.

And so to the final rotation. WG2 finished on floor exercise to claim the title while Italy held their form on the same apparatus to confirm the top two. The third medal position was still unsure, particularly with a fall from Charpy on bars, which took the 2022 bronze medallist on the apparatus a moment to regroup before finishing the routine with aplomb.

Germany, who were on vault, were unable to make the gains needed to wrest the podium spot from France, who got back on track with an inspired Colas bar routine, which scored 14.600 to whoops of delight from the team.

"I'm very happy to be here with this amazing team," said France's Lorette Charpy to Olympics.com, who has suffered two major anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in her career but returned to be part of the history-making Italian side that won World team bronze in 2023.

"I'm so happy to not just be back but to be here again and to compete. I'm so proud of my team today, even if there were some mistakes, we are on the podium."

"We make a good battle for the first place, and I'm proud of my team and I'm proud of myself," Osyssek-Reimer told us, the 23-year-old also part of the third-place team in Antwerp and a Paris 2024 Olympian.

"I like this team because there's the younger (gymnasts) and more experienced girls, like Lorette and me. It is a good balance."

It all bodes well for the upcoming World Championships in Antwerp in October, where fans will once again be treated to a gymnastics masterclass like the women's event showcasing the best of Europe in Croatia this week, which has now concluded.

The men's event is to come, taking place from Wednesday (19 August) to Sunday (23 August).
