European Athletics Championships 2026: Amy Hunt's historic quadruple signs off dominant sprint week for Team GB

The Team GB sprinter became the first athlete to win four golds at a single European Athletics Championships.

The past week has been historic for Amy Hunt , the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single European Athletics Championships.

Hunt’s final push came at the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham in the 4x100m mixed relay on Sunday (16 August), the culmination of her remarkable continental quartet.

Earlier in the week, after the 24-year-old had completed the 100m-200m sprint double, she'd stared down the cameras following her and shouted: “Are you not entertained?!”

No doubt the Briton's home fans were, even more so after the two relay golds which followed.

“ It’s so beyond the bounds of my dreams ,” Hunt said after her anchoring her team to the mixed 4x100m relay gold in a championship record of 39.97 . “I’m just euphoric right now, I can’t believe it’s happening.

“Maybe it’ll sink in at a later time, but I’m so proud of how I’ve handled myself this week. The emotions, the recovery, staying disciplined after all the highs. To run seven times in a week is no easy feat, to have my foot on the gas all week.”

It was a dream seven days on home soil for Great Britain, claiming nine medals from the seven sprint events and finishing second to Italy on the medal tally by one gold.

“I think we cleared up nearly all the sprint medals,” Hunt said with a laugh.

“I think we can say we’re a sprint nation in Europe, for sure. When you see others winning medals, you want to get out there and get a bit of that for yourself.

“I think it just shows the strength that British athletics has right now, entering this era of dominance.”

Looking ahead, the Cambridge graduate is well aware of the hard work she needs to put in over both the 100m and 200m as she eyes even bigger prize at LA 2028 .

Her personal fastest time over the short dash stands at 10.97 from the 2026 Diamond League in Stockholm; in the half-lap it's 21.68 seconds, a run which earned her a silver medal last year's World Championships. Both perfomances saw her finish runner-up to American sprint star Melissa Jefferson-Wooden .

Dina Asher-Smith: “Sport, in its purest form, doesn’t discriminate”

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith answers questions about International Women's Day and shares her thoughts on why the annual 8th March celebration is important for elevating women, amplifying stories of female success, and for people around the world to work together to realise the benefits of a gender-equal society. She talks about the importance of men being involved too, and tells us, “Sport, in its purest form, doesn’t discriminate”. In a wide-ranging chat, the Team GB athlete also reveals why she finds it helpful to see a psychologist, how it felt to become an Olympian at Rio 2016, where her drive to win comes from, and her goals for sprint success on the athletics track with Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021 - the most gender-balanced Olympics in history.

Dina Asher Smith most-decorated athlete in Euro championship history

What was even more special for Hunt, who raced seven races over seven days, was to have made the cut with one of her idols: the mixed 4x100m final saw another of Team GB sprinting stars of the week, Dina Asher-Smith , earn the status of Europe’s most decorated athlete with a record eight continental golds - and 27 international medals in all - to her name.

“When I first started in athletics, it was 2017 and Dina was all that anyone was talking about, so I’ve watched her career, I’ve watched all of her tapes, so it’s an honour and privilege to be in the same team as her.”

While Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes added to their individual silvers and men’s relay gold from the week’s haul, it was the women who rewrote the European history books.

After winning gold barely 24 hours prior in the women’s sprint relay, one more on the closing night sealed Asher-Smith's new status at the top of European track and field.

“When you first start doing track, you just want to see how fast you can go,” the 2019 world 200m champion reflected on the achievement.

“I never thought I’d get to this point, to say I’ve got 27 international medals.

“To be in this position is great, and very humbling too when you think about all the incredible athletes that I look up to and am fortunate enough to run with.

“I’m very grateful to be medalling 12 years after my European debut, 13 years after my senior debut as a 17-year-old.”
