FIVB mourns the passing of Kyla Te Wano Greensill – FIVB

The FIVB is deeply saddened by the passing of New Zealand national team player Kyla Te Wano Greensill, who died on 16 August at the age of 22.

A talented player who represented New Zealand at senior level, Te Wano Greensill was also deeply involved in volleyball in her home region of Waikato, where she competed, coached and volunteered for many years. Her sudden passing followed a meningococcal infection.

Te Wano Greensill’s connection with the sport stretched across indoor, club and beach volleyball. Throughout her playing career, she also gave her time to coaching, volunteering and supporting others, becoming a valued part of the volleyball community around her.

Her senior national team career began in 2024, when she made her Volley Ferns debut during the Trans-Tasman Test Series. A year later, she represented New Zealand at the 2025 AVC Nations Cup in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Following time away from competition with an ACL injury, Te Wano Greensill remained close to the sport, supporting friends from the sidelines and staying involved in the Waikato volleyball community. She returned to the court this year with the Huskies at a recent Midlands weekend.

Te Wano Greensill’s contribution to volleyball extended across many areas of the sport. From representing New Zealand to coaching and volunteering in Waikato, she gave her time to the game and remained closely involved with the people and communities around it. Volleyball New Zealand remembered her for the time, energy and heart she gave to volleyball at every level.

The FIVB and the global Volleyball Family extend their heartfelt condolences to Kyla’s family, friends and teammates, Volleyball New Zealand and the wider New Zealand volleyball community.
