India will renew their storied rivalry with Pakistan in a crucial Pool D match at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, on Wednesday.
The India vs Pakistan hockey match will start at 6:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) and will be available to watch on live streaming and live telecast in India.
World No. 8 India are currently second in Pool D with three points from two matches. Harmanpreet Singh and Co. opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales before going down 4-2 against England on Monday.
Pakistan, 12th in the hockey rankings, have one point from two matches. They lost 4-1 to England in their opener before playing out a 3-3 draw with Wales.
England, with six points from two victories, have already assured themselves of a top-two finish in Pool D, leaving India, Pakistan and Wales in contention for the other spot.
A draw against Pakistan could be enough for India in the race for the semi-finals. At the same time, a defeat could complicate their prospects depending on the final Pool D standings and the relevant tiebreakers.
Pakistan, meanwhile, need to beat India to stay in contention for the last four.
Wales will take on England earlier on Wednesday, meaning India and Pakistan will know the result of the other Pool D match before taking the field in Amstelveen.
The top two teams from each of the four first-round pools progress to the second round and remain in contention for the semi-finals, while the bottom two enter the ninth-to-16th-place classification round.
India and Pakistan are two of the most successful teams in international hockey .
With eight gold medals, India are the most successful team in Olympic hockey history, while Pakistan have won three Olympic titles.
Pakistan are also the most successful team in Hockey World Cup history with four titles. India’s only World Cup title came in 1975.
India chief coach Craig Fulton, however, is wary of getting caught up in the occasion.
“We always have the rivalry; that’s never off the table. As a proud coach of the Indian team, you want to win every time you play against Pakistan. That’s a given,” Fulton said.
“As long as we know what they are good at and we stop them from doing that and we play the game and not the occasion, we’ve got a good chance.”
India will once again look to captain Harmanpreet Singh for inspiration.
The star drag-flicker has scored three goals in India’s opening two matches at the World Cup, all from penalty corners. He struck twice against Wales and was also on target in the 4-2 defeat to England.
Pakistan, meanwhile, will be driven by the urgency of their situation as they seek their first victory of the tournament.

Pakistan lead the India vs Pakistan hockey head-to-head , having won 82 of the 183 matches played between the two teams. India have won 69 while 32 matches have ended in draws.
India, however, have dominated the rivalry over the past decade. Pakistan’s 1-0 victory in the 2016 South Asian Games final remains their most recent win over India.
India have been unbeaten in the 19 meetings since, winning 17 and drawing two.
The most recent meetings came in the FIH Pro League in London in June, where India completed a double over Pakistan with 4-3 and 7-1 victories.
Wednesday’s match will also mark the first India-Pakistan meeting at the Hockey World Cup in 16 years. The arch-rivals last faced each other at the tournament in New Delhi in 2010, when India registered a memorable 4-1 victory.
