Dr. Johannes Koal, a research assistant at the Chair of Joining Technology and Assembly at TUD, demonstrated in a lecture during the summer semester of 2026 how to stick an elephant to the ceiling.
What’s it like to sit in a real lecture hall, meet real-life scientists, and join them in exploring the big questions of our time? Children ages 8 to 12 can explore the Dresden Children’s University , organized by TUD Dresden University of Technology and the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum. From invisible emotions to plants, healthy eating, climate protection, and the school of the future, this semester’s four lectures invite children to take a closer look at the world around them, and to ask questions that matter to them. Registration for the upcoming semester opens on August 24, 2026.
Questions that matter to kids — answers that inspire
The young “students” will get a literally “tasty” start to the semester. In the first lecture, nutritionist Prof. Jana Markert explains which foods are good for us — and what our eating habits have to do with climate protection.
In the second lecture, the children will become plant experts: Landscape architect and gardener Jun.-Prof. Nora Huxmann uses the sunflower as an example to explain what plants need to thrive, why choosing the right location is crucial, and how selecting the right plants can benefit people, animals, and the urban climate.
How can school be designed to fit children — rather than the other way around? That’s what Prof. Anke Langner is researching at the University School Dresden. In the third lecture, the educational scientist explains how new forms of learning and teaching are being tested in this unique “research lab.” Together with the children, she explores what the school of tomorrow might look like.
The children will join Linn Radtke from the Free University of Berlin in exploring something invisible: Emotions can’t be seen, yet they influence how we think, act, and feel. In the final lecture of the semester, the children will learn why we sometimes get angry, sad, or anxious — and how best to deal with these emotions.
