Egypt and Bahrain win gold and silver at Arab U17 Men’s Volleyball Championship in Isa Town, Bahrain; Egypt unbeaten in five matches.
Empowerment-funded Egypt and Bahrain top Arab U17 Champs, while Sweden and England make NEVZA podium – FIVB
The men’s teams of Sweden and England, and the youth boys’ teams of Egypt (pictured in the main photo; source: Evbf) and Bahrain, all supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, earned medals at regional and zonal volleyball competitions last week.
Arab U17 Men’s Volleyball Championship in Isa Town, Bahrain
FIVB Volleyball Empowerment beneficiaries Egypt and Bahrain earned gold and silver at the Arab U17 Men’s Volleyball Championship held in Isa Town, Bahrain. Kuwait completed the podium with bronze.
The Egyptian Volleyball Federation has so far been allocated a total of USD 451,500 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams, in addition to USD 6,000 for a national team coach development knowledge transfer program. Brazilian coach Percy Oncken has been working with Egypt’s age-group men’s national teams. The Bahrain Volleyball Association has been granted a total of USD 252,000 worth of FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national teams. Their youth selection is trained by Yusuf Kalfa Al Asbool and Mohammed Salman Ebrahim Hassan.
The Arab U17 Men’s Volleyball Championship was conducted in a six-team single round-robin format. Yet to lose a set in the competition, Egypt and hosts Bahrain met each other in the very last match on the program on Sunday and it proved to be the de facto final of the tournament. Egypt disappointed the home fans with a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21) victory and triumphed as Arab U17 champions unbeaten in five matches played. Bahrain settled for silver on a 4-1 win-loss record.
On 2-3 each, Kuwait edged ahead of Algeria and Saudi Arabia on points to claim the bronze. Winless Jordan finished in sixth place.
The Dream Team of the Arab U17 Men’s Volleyball Championship was composed of setter Adham El-Nady (Egypt), opposite Mohammed Kadhem (Bahrain), outside hitters Mohamed Haram (Bahrain) and Yassin Ahmed (Egypt), middle blockers Ammar Ebrahim (Bahrain) and Ahmed Abdelhamid (Egypt), and libero Mohammed Al-Zaabi (Kuwait). Egypt’s Adham Ghanem was recognized as the tournament’s Best Scorer.

NEVZA Men’s Volleyball Championship in Varde, Denmark
Supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, Sweden and England pocketed gold and bronze, respectively, at the NEVZA Men’s Volleyball Championship that took place in Varde, Denmark last week. The home team finished in second place.
The Swedish Volleyball Association has been funded with USD 420,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams, in addition to USD 9,000 in national team coach development knowledge transfer programs for volleyball. Their men’s national team benefits from the expertise of Dutch coach Gido Vermeulen. Volleyball England has so far received USD 126,000 in FIVB Volleyball Empowerment coach support for their national volleyball teams working under the supervision of Indoor Performance Director Alex Porter, in addition to USD 12,000 for national team coach development knowledge transfer programs.
NEVZA Men’s Volleyball Championship took place in the format of a four-team single round robin. Before the very last match on the program, between Denmark and Sweden, the two teams stood on a perfect record of two straight-set wins each. The direct battle for the North European zonal title between them resulted in a 3-0 (34-32, 25-17, 25-12) Swedish win.
Before that, England celebrated their first win of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-13) shutout of Greenland, to claim the bronze and leave their opponents winless in fourth place at the bottom of the table.

EAVA Women’s Volleyball Championship in Hong Kong, China
Japan triumphed as Eastern Asian zonal champions at the EAVA Women’s Volleyball Championship in Hong Kong. China and Korea also made the podium with silver and bronze, respectively.
Japan lost their opening match to China in straight sets, but that was their last defeat of the tournament. They finished Pool B runners-up to China on a 2-1 win-loss record to progress to the semifinals, where they hammered out a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) shutout of undefeated Pool A winners Korea. In the other semifinal, China beat hosts Hong Kong by 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-6) to set up another meeting with Japan.
In the gold medal showdown, Japan mastered an emphatic 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-15) revenge and conquered the zonal crown. Korea earned bronze after a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-13) sweep of the third-place game against Hong Kong.
Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Mongolia and Macao lined up in the places from fourth to seventh in the final standings.
EAVA Women’s Volleyball Championship: results, standings and statistics
ECVA Women’s Volleyball Championship in Road Town, British Virgin Islands
Bermuda, Antigua & Barbuda and Saint Lucia earned gold, silver and bronze, respectively, at the ECVA Women’s Volleyball Championships in Road Town, British Virgin Islands.
Bermuda topped Pool B undefeated in three matches and went on to outplay hosts British Virgin Islands in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-27, 30-28, 25-20) semifinal. In the gold medal showdown, Bermuda delivered a hard-fought 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 25-20) victory over Antigua & Barbuda to snatch the Eastern Caribbean women’s zonal title.
Antigua & Barbuda also reached the final unbeaten. In their semifinal, they achieved a 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-23, 25-23) win over Saint Lucia, who bounced back with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22) sweep of the bronze medal match against British Virgin Islands.
The home team, Dominica, Anguilla and Grenada lined up from fourth to seventh in the final standings.
Bermuda’s 20-year-old outside hitter Natalie Gazzard earned the MVP honors, the Best Scorer award and the Best Receiver award. The Dream Team was composed of setter Olivia Gazzard (Bermuda), opposite Chenoa Evans (Saint Lucia), outside hitters Josanne Lewis (Antigua & Barbuda) and Valissia Brathwaite (British Virgin Islands), middle blockers Amber Simons (Bermuda) and Asia Mc Call (British Virgin Islands), and libero Cailey Longwoth (Bermuda). The Best Digger award went to Tennayestlgni Joseph of Saint Lucia, while the Best Server recognition was claimed by Rayana Regis of Antigua & Barbuda.

ECVA Men’s Volleyball Championship in Road Town, British Virgin Islands
Saint Vincent & Grenadines conquered the men’s Eastern Caribbean zonal crown by winning the ECVA Men’s Volleyball Championship in Road Town, British Virgin Islands. Saint Lucia and Dominica finished first and second runners-up.
Saint Vincent & Grenadines lost only one game throughout the competition, in their pool encounter with Saint Lucia. They still edged this opponent on points to top Pool A. In the semifinals, Saint Vincent & Grenadines produced a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) shutout of Bermuda, and in the final match, they took their revenge from Saint Lucia with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22) comeback victory.
To secure at least a silver-medal finish, Saint Lucia beat Pool B winners Dominica in a nail-biting 3-2 (16-25, 26-28, 35-33, 25-23, 20-18) semifinal reverse sweep. Dominica recovered to persevere through another thrilling five-set battle and turn things around against Saint Lucia to claim a 3-2 (17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 21-19) victory for the bronze.
Saint Lucia, Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, British Virgin Islands and Anguilla took the places from fourth to eighth.
The MVP nomination, the Best Scorer award and the Best Server award went to Saint Vincent & Grenadines’ 24-year-old outside hitter Jamaar Cropper. Setter J’den Robinson (Dominica), opposite Ronaldo Franklyn (Saint Vincent & Grenadines), outside hitters Sherron Vidal (Dominica) and Larian Tulloch (Dominica), middle blockers Jenson Mitchell (Grenada) and Alexander Southern (Bermuda), and libero Mervin Mingo (Dominica) made up the Dream Team. Grenada’s Shevon Gludd was recognized as Best Digger, while Bermuda’s Joshua Wilson brought home the Best Receiver award.
