Holidays with a Future: First HSBA Junior Summer School a Resounding Success
40 pupils voluntarily swapped their deckchairs for a seminar room for a week
Full of motivation and curiosity, 40 pupils from all over Germany took part in the very first HSBA Junior Summer School at the start of August. This new course format offers young people aged between 15 and 19 the opportunity to spend a week during the holidays delving deeply into business topics such as leadership, finance, marketing and artificial intelligence, to network with like-minded peers and to prepare for their entry into the business world.
“ This week has been the most valuable milestone for my future career so far, and I couldn’t have imagined it going any better .” Leni, 17 years old
Once all the modules had been completed, the participants rated the company visits, the interactive and practical approach to the topics, and the opportunity to exchange ideas with like-minded peers and students particularly highly. The variety of topics and the modules taught in English were also well received by the participants, enabling them to gain a realistic insight into how a dual business degree programme works and providing them with guidance as they embark on their careers in the business world
“ The Junior Summer School helped me understand how lectures actually work. The case studies we did helped me decide whether business studies is really the right thing for me, because they showed me that the teaching is very practice-oriented .” Moritz, 17 years old
Prof. Dr Max Johns, Academic Director of the Junior Summer School and Vice-President of HSBA, is delighted with the positive feedback from participants:
“ Young people need guidance as they plan their transition from school into the world of work. This is precisely where the Junior HSBA comes in: we provide insights, offer guidance and build a bridge between school, university and the world of work. The high demand and excellent feedback show us that we’re striking a chord – and encourage us to further expand our practical holiday programme next year .”
The Junior Summer School comprises 34 interactive lessons covering ten different business topics and current trends. Some modules are also taught in English to provide a realistic academic experience. In addition to two company visits to Hamburg-based companies such as Hapag-Lloyd AG and Vattenfall, there is the opportunity to chat with HSBA students during lunch breaks.
In 2027, the Junior Summer School will be expanded to include a further intensive course focusing on AI and data science. Registration will open in September: HSBA Junior Summer School 2027
Here’s what participants have to say about the HSBA Junior Summer School:
“What I liked best about the Summer School was that it gave us a range of insights into the topics. I now know for sure which degree programme I’d choose. I also thought the company visits were pretty cool. And something else that’s really important to me is that I got to meet so many great new people.” Camille, 18 years old
“The Junior Summer School helped me understand how lectures actually work. The case studies we did helped me decide whether business studies is really the right thing for me, because they showed me that the teaching is very practice-oriented.” Moritz, 17 years old
“The Junior Summer School made me decide to study business administration here after my A-levels. I find it really appealing that you can gain practical experience straight away, and I enjoyed it.” Hanna, 19 years old
