Rising tennis star Amanda Anisimova booked her place in the women’s singles quarter-finals at the 2026 Cincinnati Open on Wednesday (19 August), beating 2026 Wimbledon singles champion Linda Nosková in what was expected to be a competitive round-of-16 clash.

But the Czech, who entered the draw as the No. 6 seed, played like an entirely different player than the one who ran the draw on the sport’s only grass-court major weeks ago, succumbing to service troubles under the afternoon heat in the Queen City.

Giving up two break points in the first set, and another key break in the second, she ultimately ceded the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to a dominant Anisimova, who held the advantage in almost every statistic during the match.

Controlling play from the service line, where she produced seven aces and an astonishing 82 per cent of first-serve points, she won every set on service and never faced a single break on return.

The win put her on a collision course with No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula , who came from behind to beat Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Both players have yet to run the draw in Cincinnati, setting up a mouthwatering all-American clash in the quarter-finals.

“I think I did a good there, in the end, to kind of just push myself a little bit to be as aggressive as possible and it worked,” Pegula said of her round-of-16 match against Cîrstea. She’ll certainly look to employ a similar formula against Anisimova on Thursday, 20 August.
