Tennis: Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz confirms US Open return: “Here we go”

The defending champion announced his comeback on Instagram, four months after a wrist injury paused his season in Barcelona.

Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist and seven-time Grand Slam tennis champion Carlos Alcaraz is going back to New York.

The defending US Open champion confirmed he will play in the final Grand Slam of the season in a video posted on Thursday (20 August), ending a four-month absence as he rehabbed a wrist injury.

“I’m back. Here we go,” said Alcaraz in the video .

The Spaniard has not competed since mid-April at the Barcelona Open, where he won his opening match before withdrawing . He missed Roland-Garros and Wimbledon , then pulled out of the Cincinnati Open earlier this month to keep building towards Flushing Meadows.

His 2026 season had opened strong, winning the Australian Open for the first time and adding the Qatar Open, before a semi-final run at Indian Wells and losing to Jannik Sinner in the final at Monte-Carlo.

A year ago, Alcaraz beat Sinner in the US Open final.

The U.S. major main draw begins on Sunday (30 August). No man has defended the US Open title since Roger Federer won the last of five straight in 2008.
