Lectures of Prof. Sigrid Brell-Cokan and Dr. Lidia Atanasova on the third of September, in the context of the Capitalising on uncertainty summer school 's fourth day, focussing on design with uncertainty

On the day 3 of the Capitalising on uncertainty summer school, we have the pleasure to welcome two lecturers focussing on design with uncertainty:

Sigrid Brell-Cokcan is the founder and director of the Chair of Individualized Production at RWTH Aachen University, President of the Association for Robots in Architecture (RiA), and a member of the Board of Directors of euRobotics. With a background in architecture, she has collaborated with leading international practices including Coop Himmelblau, Frank Gehry, Peter Cook, and Bollinger + Grohmann. Her research focuses on making industrial robotics accessible to architecture and construction, particularly through intuitive human–robot interaction and digital fabrication workflows. At RWTH Aachen, she leads interdisciplinary research on innovative machinery, individualized production, and user-friendly interfaces that connect design directly to robotic fabrication. She also co-founded the Center for Construction Robotics, bringing together academia and industry to advance automation in construction. Her work has contributed to European robotics research agendas, the development of construction robotics as a field, and new approaches to flexible, human-centered robotic production.

Lidia Atanasova is a postdoctoral researcher at the Professorship of Digital Fabrication, Department of Architecture, Technical University of Munich. An architect by training, she works across computational design and digital fabrication to advance human–robot collaboration in building construction — pairing human judgment and dexterity with the spatial precision of robotic systems. She completed her doctoral dissertation, "Building (with) Human-Robot Teams" with distinction in 2025, developed within the TUM Innovation Network "CoConstruct." This research introduced fabrication-aware design methods and adaptive workflows for AR-guided human-robot cooperative assembly. In 2024 she was a visiting researcher at XAIA lab, Princeton School of Architecture, working on Augmented TimberCraft and AR Timber Assembly. She has taught design studios and seminars on computational design and digital fabrication at TUM since 2019 and co-led international workshops. Her current research explores how machine intelligence can carry craft knowledge into robotic making.
