Nelson Mandela International Day 2026: Dignity, Reintegration and Action

Every year on 18 July, Nelson Mandela International Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the values of dignity, equality and solidarity, and to recognise the role that individual and collective action can play in building a fairer and more inclusive society.

This year, under the international theme “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality”, EUAM RCA joined the Ministry of Justice, the Central African Penitentiary Administration and other partners in activities organised at Bimbo Women’s Prison, Ngaragba Prison and the Camp de Roux detention facility.

At Bimbo Women’s Prison, the Head of Mission of EUAM RCA, accompanied by the Mission’s Human Rights Adviser and Penitentiary Administration Adviser, took part in discussions on social inequalities and the reintegration of persons deprived of liberty. The exchanges highlighted both the challenges faced by detainees and the importance of preparing for their successful reintegration into society.

At Camp de Roux, EUAM RCA’s Acting Deputy Head of Mission

Chief of Staff and Penitentiary Administration Adviser joined recreational and sporting activities designed to foster interaction, mutual respect and cohesion. The activities concluded with the presentation of prizes to the participants.

The Mission also joined activities at Ngaragba Prison, as part of the broader commemoration bringing together penitentiary authorities, partners and persons deprived of liberty around the principles promoted by Nelson Mandela International Day.

Beyond the commemorative activities, the message is clear: respect for human dignity and fundamental rights, together with effective rehabilitation and reintegration, are essential components of a humane and effective penitentiary system. They also contribute to stronger institutions, greater social cohesion and the rule of law.

Working alongside the Ministry of Justice and the Penitentiary Administration, EUAM RCA remains committed to supporting Central African efforts to strengthen the penitentiary system, promote respect for human rights and reinforce institutions that serve the population.

Nelson Mandela’s legacy reminds us that meaningful change is built through concrete action — and that every action counts.
