Små gestar kan inspirere oss og leie oss på vegen mot forsoning. Det sa pave Leo XIV då biskopane i Den norske kyrkja var i audiens hjå paven, i samband med deira studietur til Roma. – Det var ei ære å møte pave Leo, og vi hadde ein god og viktig samtale, fortel preses Olav Fykse Tveit. Som leiar i Bispemøtet heldt han innleiing til samtalen. Der snakka han mellom anna om den kristne einskapen, at kristne høyrer saman fordi de trur på den same Jesus, sjølv om ein har litt ulik teologi og tradisjon: – At vi er eitt er ei gåve frå Gud, og den deler vi som søstre og brødre i Kristus. Han understreka den lange og gode dialogen mellom Den romersk-katolske kyrkja og Den norske kyrkja – og han ynskjer at dette skal halde fram: – Vi håpar og ber om at denne fellesskapen i Kristus kan bli enda meir synleg, til gagn for at verda skal tru og at menneska skal håpe og elske. Dette er vårt felles oppdrag og arbeid i den tida Gud har gitt oss å tene i. Pave Leo XIV kom med ei helsing til dei norske biskopane . Han snakka også om einskapen i Kristus, på tvers av kyrkjesamfunn og at vi også må jobbe saman for fred. – Med grunnlag i vår felles dåp og vår felles sending til verda, bed eg om at vi alltid saman må vekse i vår teneste for å fremje fred og rettferd, sa paven. Biskopane merka seg også at pave Leo hadde kjennskap til dei to kyrkjene sine felles historie i Noreg, då han mellom anna refererte til Olav den heilage og St. Sunniva. Håpar regjeringa vil invitere til 2030 Preses Fykse Tveit nytta også besøket til å formidle at Den norske kyrkja ynskjer paven velkomen til nasjonaljubileet i Noreg i 2030: – Eg håpar og trur at den norske regjeringa vil fasilitere ein invitasjon i god tid. Du er velkomen som leiar for den romersk-katolske kyrkja i dag, som ein bror i Kristus og pilegrim, til bøn i Nidarosdomen, som også er grava til Olav den heilage. Preses meiner eit besøk vil kunne bli eit tydeleg teikn på kristent vitnesbyrd og til inspirasjon for heile nasjonen. Ved avslutning av samlinga ønskte paven at biskopane og paven saman skulle be Fader vår, og paven leia sjølv forsamlinga i dette. Etter audiensen møtte biskopane kardinal Kurt Koch i dikasteriet for å fremje kristen einskap og hadde ein open og tillitsfull samtale om aktuelle spørsmål. Biskopane sin studietur med fokus på unge vaksne held fram i Roma og vidare til Taizé i Frankrike. Les heile talen til preses Olav Fykse Tveit her (engelsk) Address at the Audience with His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV The Most Revd Olav Fykse Tveit, Presiding Bishop Church of Norway The Vatican, August 26, 2026 Your Holiness, we greet you in the name of our one Lord Jesus Christ! It is a great honor and a moment of profound joy and gratitude to have this opportunity to meet with Your Holiness, Pope Leo; and also with Your Eminence, Cardinal Kurt Koch, head of the Dicastery for Church Unity, with whom we have had the privilege to work closely for many years in the service of the one ecumenical movement. We are encouraged by the motto you have chosen for your ministry: IN ILLO UNO UNUM. In the One, we are one. The motto for your ministry reflects the prayer of Christ himself: UT UNUM SINT - “That they all may be one”. The prayer continues: “As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” The gift of unity is a gift of grace, from the One God, which we share as sisters and brothers in Christ. We should, when referring to John 17, also quote this what comes between the words “to be one” and the “so that the world may believe”. It is the gift of being joined together as one, with and in the One God, so that we can do our joint work and give our joint witness. “Walking, working and praying together” was the profound motto we agreed to have for the visit of your predecessor, Pope Francis, to the World Council of Churches in Geneva in 2018. We live in a time when this is even more needed. The world at large and the vulnerable people in so many places suffer from the abuse of religion to legitimize violence and war. There is a struggle of the soul and integrity of Christianity in many parts of the world. The dialogue and cooperation between different religions for justice and peace in a wider sense is also an urgent matter. The far-reaching ecumenical dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and our church as part of the Lutheran communion of churches, has its most fruitful outcome and benchmark in the significant “Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.” We are One by the one grace of God in the one apostolic faith. We hope and pray that this being one in Christ can become even more visible, for the sake of the world to believe and for the people to hope and to love. This is our joint mission and work in the time we are given by God to serve. In Norway we have a history of more than a thousand years of Christianity and being the Church of Christ in our land. In 2030, we will mark the millennium of the martyrdom of St Olav. We will explore how “the law of the seed of the wheat” (as expressed in John 12) has been fulfilled. All the years of the Church and its mission, sharing the Gospel of Christ in our land, are fruits of this harvest. It is testified in the church buildings all over the land, and in the shift towards Chrisitan faith and ethos in the life and in the legislation of the country. This Christian heritage is visible and tangible in our society today, also in a time of significant diversity of faiths. Half of this millennium we were visibly and structurally united with the Roman Catholic Church, and we do recognize our common roots and history as we prepare for this event. The Cathedral of Nidaros where two of us serve as bishops today, was the Episcopal See of the Archbishops appointed by the Popes from 1153 to 1537. We hope and pray that the years ahead of us can be a new opportunity to affirm ecumenically what we have together as churches in Norway, and what we share as nation in our Christian and humanistic values. Your Holiness should be assured of being heartly welcomed by our church, in relation to the millennium jubilee. I hope and believe that the Norwegian government will facilitate an invitation in due time. You are welcome as head of the Roman Catholic Church today, as a brother in Christ and pilgrim, to pray with us in Nidaros Cathedral, which is also the grave of St Olav. The ecumenical family of churches will join us in this welcome. It will be a significant sign of christian witness and inspiration for the whole nation. In the same year, of 2030, we will also mark the 500 years of our most profound Lutheran confession, the Confessio Augustana. The 60 years of ecumenical dialogue with Catholic theologians has made us more aware of the ecumenical potential of this document, which is meant to be a confirmation of our unity in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. We must always express and be grounded in the One apostolic faith of the Church. This requires also willingness to practice mutual accountability. Pastoral and practical ecumenism is of importance also for us in Norway. Our ecumenical agreements must lead to reception in the daily lives of people, for example, addressing the question of communion for all those in Lutheran-Catholic marriages. In our visit to Rome, we are invited by the San Egidio movement to listen, see, and discuss how young people in our time seek and find their place in the church, and how they thereby can grow in faith and serve God and humanity. This is a focus and priority for us as Church of Norway these years. We are convinced that we share this commitment. We also will visit Taizé on this pilgrimage. We look to Your Holiness and acknowledge your significant role conveying the common Christian voice and commitment for peace and justice in our time. We firmly share with you the great concern for the peace of the world, and particularly for some of the most critical situations for peace in Ukraine, Palestine, Sudan, Congo and so many other places. Together we must hear and respond to the cry of the whole of Creation and of humanity. When you raise the critique against the warlords of our time, you speak also on behalf of us, and of the One humanity, calling for respect for the dignity and life of all human beings. We welcome your profound study and reflections on the challenges for humanity in the use of Artificial Intelligence. It comes as a prophetic initiative in a world of rapid changes. Again, we thank you for this generous opportunity to meet here today. We give thanks to God for this moment, as a special gift from the One God.
