Sewing-Based Training for Young Women with a Focus on “Sustainability”

To open up new opportunities for young women through hands-on vocational training and to empower them on their path to a self-determined and economically independent life. In addition to technical skills, the program also teaches knowledge that helps them develop their own income-generating opportunities.

Many young women in Kenya have limited access to education and vocational training. In particular, dropping out of school, early pregnancies, motherhood , and difficult social and economic living conditions can significantly impair their educational and career opportunities. Without a high school diploma or vocational qualifications, it is often difficult to secure a job that provides a living wage.

Menstrual poverty can also hinder girls’ educational paths. When girls and women cannot afford sufficient menstrual products, they often stay home during their periods out of shame or due to a lack of hygienic facilities. This leads to regular absences and can contribute to school dropouts in the long term. The lack of access to menstrual products is therefore not only a matter of health and dignity, but also of education and social participation.

Young mothers, in particular, face additional challenges such as a lack of income, financial dependence, and a lack of childcare. As a result, their opportunities to make lasting changes to their own life circumstances remain limited.

What does that mean, specifically?

The nonprofit organization SOLWOGIDI Malindi provides young women with hands-on training in sewing. Through the program, participants acquire craftsmanship skills and learn to make clothing and other products on their own. In addition, they gain basic knowledge in areas such as business management , saving, and financial planning. This equips the women with skills that can help them enter the workforce or start their own small businesses.

There is a special focus on sustainability . The women learn to make products that conserve resources and explore sustainable solutions for their daily lives and their communities. This includes making reusable menstrual pads. These can help reduce period poverty and make it easier for girls to attend school regularly.

The training program not only strengthens professional skills but also builds self-confidence and a sense of initiative. The women gain initial practical experience and can use their newly acquired skills to find employment or start their own businesses. This puts them in a better position to earn their own income in the long term and become more economically independent.

At the same time, obstacles remain along this path, such as a lack of start-up capital, insufficient childcare, or limited work experience. Therefore, ongoing support and guidance are essential components for ensuring that the training leads to sustainable long-term career prospects.
