Elias is passionate about data and artificial intelligence. As a lead data scientist, he investigates the patterns that can be identified in data and how they can lead to better decisions and new solutions. He remains curious even in his free time: In addition to spending time with his family and friends, he enjoys exploring new technologies.
How old are you, where are you from, and what do you like to do in your free time?
I’m 36 years young and live with my family in beautiful Lyss. I enjoy spending my free time with my family and friends, or learning about new technologies.
What is your role with us?
As Lead Data Scientist, I lead our Intelligence Center, a team that develops new solutions using data, reports, statistics, and artificial intelligence (AI). This helps Ypsomed work more efficiently, make better decisions, and grow successfully.
What do you like about your work and the company?
I love the great company culture at Ypsomed. We have hardworking colleagues here who come to work every day with a lot of passion and invest a great deal to help people with chronic conditions live better lives. What I particularly enjoy about my work is using data to influence important decisions and achieve optimizations that simplify our work and increase our productivity.
What personally appeals to you about data science?
With the help of data, you can show why something happened and which factors had an influence. It becomes even more exciting when we use data to look into the future. Based on patterns, we can calculate probabilities, predict trends, and derive concrete recommendations for action. In many cases, processes can even be automated.
I’m convinced that data science is often underestimated. Many of today’s most successful digital business models are based on data and artificial intelligence. Companies like Airbnb don’t own any real estate, and platforms like Uber don’t have their own fleet of vehicles – their actual value comes from the intelligent use of data. This also creates new opportunities in industry. Production facilities, for example, generate valuable data that can provide additional insights and potentially even enable new business models.
What role does artificial intelligence currently play in your day-to-day work?
Today, about 80 percent of my work consists of data engineering and 20 percent of AI-related tasks. Data engineering involves collecting data from various sources, processing it, and putting it into a format that can be worked with. This data forms the foundation for business intelligence– that is, reports and analyses – as well as for modern AI applications.
Nevertheless, artificial intelligence already plays an important role in our everyday lives. Especially in the field of software development, we use AI-powered tools to generate code and accelerate development processes. For the development of solutions such as Ypsomed Process Monitoring (YPM360), we are increasingly relying on intelligent agents that can generate program code based on specifications.
YPM360 captures and analyzes signals and curve data from injection molding machines. Several AI models use this data to predict relevant quality characteristics of the produced components, which currently still have to be measured manually on a regular basis. The goal is to reduce these manual in-process inspections by up to 90 percent in the future.
With the help of AI agents and modern software development tools, we can develop functionalities faster, shorten project timelines, and use resources more efficiently. Whereas a few thousand lines of code per day used to be a realistic goal, we can now achieve significantly higher development output while maintaining quality.
Where do you see the greatest potential for AI at Ypsomed – today and in the future?
I currently see the greatest potential in the production environment. There, AI solutions can relieve employees of repetitive tasks, accelerate processes, and provide new insights.
With initiatives like YPM360, we’re working to make quality controls in production more efficient, further improve the traceability of our products, and make production data more usable. This creates greater transparency and a better foundation for decision-making.
AI also offers great potential in the office environment. Information can be found more quickly, processes can be made more efficient, and decisions can be made on a stronger data-driven basis. In the long term, the goal is to accelerate the entire value chain—from the initial customer inquiry to the finished product. If we can shorten processes while simultaneously improving quality, we create real added value for customers and employees.
Are there already specific AI use cases that you are implementing or testing?
Yes, we’ve already launched several specific projects. One key example is YpsoMind, our in-house AI solution. Following its initial successful rollout, we’re already working on the next generation and continuously refining the platform.
At the same time, we’re driving forward various data- and AI-driven use cases with YPM360, particularly in the areas of production, process efficiency, and transparency.
Another focus is on reporting and analytics. Until now, many analyses were primarily based on SAP data. Today, however, valuable insights are also generated in other systems such as Jira. That’s why we’re working on solutions that bring together data from different sources. For example, this allows us to compare planned projects from portfolio management with the tasks that were actually completed, enabling us to make more informed decisions.
In addition, we’re constantly evaluating new technologies and infrastructure components to further expand the foundation for future AI applications at Ypsomed.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
There’s hardly ever a truly typical workday for me. My tasks range from developing new solutions to conducting workshops with business units to strategy and concept development.
Part of my time is spent coordinating with internal stakeholders to understand requirements and prioritize projects. In addition, we’re deeply involved in research and innovation: we analyze problems, evaluate new technologies, and seek out the best solutions.
On top of that, there are classic IT topics like system integrations, access rights, and technical infrastructure issues. It’s precisely this diversity that makes the work so exciting for me – no two days are alike.
How have you grown with us?
I started in Technology as a Development Engineer. Later, I worked as an Operations Project Manager, and eventually as a Data Scientist in IT.
What is the work environment like at Ypsomed?
I find the work environment at Ypsomed to be very pleasant and supportive. There are many dedicated people here who are passionate about their work and want to make a difference together. You can tell that employees are committed not only to their own tasks but also to the company’s long-term success.
Of course, there are also controversial discussions. However, I see this as a positive thing, because it shows that people are taking responsibility, bringing different perspectives to the table, and actively engaging with the challenges. This passion and the determination to find the best solution shape our collaboration.
I particularly appreciate the combination of a spirit of innovation and stability. Ypsomed has big ambitions and a commitment to continuous improvement. At the same time, the family-run structure offers long-term stability and reliability.
Do you commute? What is your experience with that?
I commute by car from Lyss. It usually takes half an hour.
