Selection concept for the 4th
European Games Istanbul 2027

1 Introduction

The present selection concept in combination with Swiss Olympic’s official selection concept
defines the criteria and the process of selection for the next upcoming representative
individual event of the Swiss National Team.

European Games
Istanbul (TUR), 16.06.2026 – 27.06.2026

3 Participants
World Ranking date to determine eligibility: 30th March 2027

Men’s singles 32 players
Women’s singles 32 players
Men’s doubles 32 players (16 pairs)
Women’s doubles 32 players (16 pairs)
Mixed doubles 32 players (16 pairs)

Only pairs with athletes from the same NOC will be considered during the quota allocation in
doubles and mixed events.

Maximum number of athletes for Switzerland

Men’s singles 2 players if one player is ranked 1 – 8, otherwise 1 player
Women’s singles 2 players if one player is ranked 1 – 8, otherwise 1 player
Men’s doubles 4 players (2 pairs) if one pair is ranked 1 - 4, otherwise 2 players (1 pair)
Women’s doubles 4 players (2 pairs) if one pair is ranked 1 - 4, otherwise 2 players (1 pair)
Mixed doubles 4 players (2 pairs) if one pair is ranked 1 - 4, otherwise 2 players (1 pair)

If Switzerland has more athletes/pairs qualified in any event than its entitled
number of Quota Places, according to the BWF World Ranking Lists of 30 March
2027, Swiss Badminton can decide to decline a Quota Place allocated to a higher ranked
athlete/pair and choose a lower ranked eligible athlete/pair.

4 Selection
The selection aims to provide the strongest representatives that can achieve the
performance goal of Swiss Badminton. The performance goal is to be competitive on the
international level and to build up a pathway to win a medal at the European Championships
or European Games and qualify for Olympic Games.

Qualification for the European Games according to the “Qualification system for the
4th European Games Istanbul 2027 Badminton Europe”.

Additional selection criteria

•
Part of the National Team Elite (Internal A or B status)
•
The discipline where the player is qualified is part of his/her focus and his/her long-
term goals
•
BWF Ranking
•
Judgment of the coaches
•
Current shape
•
Health
•
Potential for a personal best
•
Potential for the next representative individual event

Preparation period for the European Games

Selected athletes are required to participate in a 6-week dedicated preparation block leading
to the European Games. This preparation period is mandatory and non-negotiable to ensure
optimal performance readiness. Players with an individual set-up must train 3 full weeks at
the National Center before the start of the event within the 6-week preparation block.

5 Communication
It is the task of the National Coaches to communicate the final selection to all the players
verbally after the selection confirmation from Swiss Olympic.
