Climate Classroom launches across three Serbian institutions nationwide successfully; Slovenian Statistical Society bulletin feature EU Code Week

Climate Classroom: From Statistics to Sustainable Action

Climate Classroom is a project-based learning initiative implemented across three institutions in Serbia — the Faculty of Contemporary Arts, the Information Technology School, and the Information Technology High School. Opened by Brankica Todorovic, PhD, the first teacher from Serbia to join the Climate Classroom platform, the initiative embeds climate change into curricular and extracurricular project work, helping students build practical sustainability competencies they can apply in real-world contexts. Two activities illustrate this approach. During EU Code Week 2025, students were assigned a creative Statistical Challenge within the subject Statistics: selecting an appropriate SDG indicator, identifying key issues in its development, and proposing improvements and solutions — including an analysis of SDG 13 (Climate Action) through creative and innovative approaches. In a second activity, students designed and led an awareness campaign titled "Excessive use of emails increases carbon dioxide emissions," presenting statistical data on unnecessary weekly email use and its environmental impact, supported by an original poster. Together, these activities translate climate and sustainability knowledge into concrete, student-led outputs — combining statistical thinking, systems thinking, and everyday behaviour change. The initiative's relevance has been recognised beyond Serbia: an activity from the Climate Classroom was featured in the Statistical Society of Slovenia's bulletin "Uporaba statistike v marketingu" and "STATISTIKA 2030 – ORODJE ZA DOSEGANJE DIGITALNIH VEŠČIN IN USTVARJALNOSTI" (No. 66

LXVI, March 2026) and EU CODE WEEK. The project itself was highlighted by the Education for Climate Coalition in its Community Spotlight series. An operational action plan is guiding further joint activities across the three participating institutions.
