Zurich Diamond League 2026: Rumesh Tharanga throws javelin 92m again to extend winning run

The Commonwealth Games champion has won 11 of his 12 competitions this year and extended his winning streak to six with a 92.07m effort in Zurich.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his outstanding season by winning the javelin throw at the Zurich Diamond League 2026 with a massive 92.07m effort on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Commonwealth Games champion produced the winning throw with his sixth and final attempt at the Letzigrund Stadium to finish comfortably ahead of former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada.

Peters took second place with a season-best 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner finished third after setting a personal best of 85.16m.

Tharanga, who came into the competition as the world leader following his 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League in June, started with 81.50m before improving to 88.23m in the second round.

The Sri Lankan went even further with his third attempt, registering 89.90m to strengthen his grip on top spot. He followed it with 84.91m before fouling his fifth attempt.

With victory already within reach, Tharanga saved his best for last, sending the javelin out to 92.07m in the final round.

It was the second 92m-plus throw of his career and only 55cm short of his national record and world-leading 92.62m mark set in Rome earlier this season.

Peters briefly set the early benchmark with an 86.93m opening throw but could not improve on it, recording 82.17m, 83.52m, 84.22m and 82.08m before fouling his final attempt.

Wegner, meanwhile, produced his best effort of 85.16m in the fifth round to take the final podium spot.

London 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago finished fourth with 83.02m, while Kenya’s Julius Yego was fifth with 81.66m.

Americans Marc Anthony Minichello (80.38m) and Curtis Thompson (80.31m) occupied sixth and seventh, respectively. Germany’s Thomas Röhler, the Rio 2016 Olympic champion, finished eighth with 79.86m.

Switzerland’s Simon Wieland (75.35m) and Latvia’s Patriks Gailums (74.30m) completed the 10-man field.

The victory continued a remarkable 2026 campaign for Rumesh Tharanga , who has now won 11 of his 12 competitions this year, including six in a row.

Since unleashing his 92.62m national record in Rome, Rumesh followed that with victories in Ostrava and at the Doha Diamond League before becoming Sri Lanka’s first Commonwealth Games javelin champion in Glasgow with an 89.75m effort.

Rumesh Tharanga then won the Lausanne Diamond League last week, edging India’s Neeraj Chopra by just nine centimetres with an 88.14m throw, before breaking the 92m barrier again in Zurich.
