Neeraj Chopra narrowly holds on to qualify for Diamond League Final 2026

The Indian javelin ace did not compete in the final meet in Zurich but held on to sixth place by two points to secure the last spot in the six-man Diamond League Final.

Indian javelin ace Neeraj Chopra qualified the Diamond League Final 2026 after securing the last spot for the season-ending athletics meet, to be held in Brussels, Belgium on September 4 and 5.

Earning 12 points over the season, Neeraj Chopra secured his berth in the Diamond League Final after claiming the last spot in the six-man field.

Dawid Wegner of Poland and Rio 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Röhler of Germany each ended with 10 points in the Diamond League javelin throw standings.

Wegner collected six points by finishing third at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday, while Röhler added one point after placing eighth, leaving both two points short of Neeraj.

The Indian athlete participated in only two of the five Diamond League meets that featured the men’s javelin throw event this season. He finished fourth in Doha with 85.69m in June before improving to a season-best 88.05m for second place in Lausanne last week.

Those two performances earned him five and seven points, respectively, and ultimately proved enough to book his place in Brussels.

At each Diamond League meeting, the top eight in javelin earn points, with the winner getting eight and the eighth-placed finisher one.

The top six on points at the end of the series qualify for the season-ending final, with ties decided by the best legal mark of the season.

Neeraj Chopra has now qualified for five consecutive Diamond League Final events. He won the title in 2022 and finished runner-up from 2023 to 2025.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga topped the standings with 39 points after winning the Zurich Diamond League with a massive 92.07m effort.

Neeraj Chopra, who skipped the Zurich meet, was pipped by Rumesh Tharanga to the Commonwealth Games title last month.

The Sri Lankan has, in fact, finished ahead of Neeraj in their last four meetings since the World Championships in Tokyo last September.

Former world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, reigning champion Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, Olympic medallist Julius Yego of Kenya and the United States’ Curtis Thompson are the other athletes who qualified for the Diamond League Final.

The men’s javelin event will take place on the second day of the Diamond League Final on Friday at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.
