Defending champions Germany will take on Spain in the men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 final at the Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium, on Sunday.
The Spain vs Germany Hockey World Cup 2026 final is scheduled to start at 8:00 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
While Germany will aim to defend the crown they won in 2023 and lift their fourth title, Spain will chase their maiden Hockey World Cup trophy.
A victory on Sunday would see Germany draw level with Pakistan as the most successful team in men’s Hockey World Cup history with four triumphs.
Pakistan have won a record four titles - in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994 - while Germany were champions in 2002, 2006 and 2023.
Spain booked their place in the title clash with a thrilling 4-3 victory over co-hosts the Netherlands in the semi-finals in Amstelveen on Friday.
Jose Basterra scored a hat-trick while Pepe Cunill was also on target as the Spanish hockey team reached the World Cup final for the first time since 1998.
Germany, meanwhile, defeated Argentina 2-1 in the other semi-final in Wavre. Justus Weigand broke the deadlock in the third quarter before Argentina’s Tomas Domene equalised. Paul-Philipp Kaufmann struck the winner six minutes from time to send the defending champions through.
The two finalists are already familiar with each other at this World Cup.
Spain and Germany met in Pool F of the second stage last week, with the Spaniards registering a 2-1 victory.
Germany nevertheless finished on top of Pool F with six points, while Spain progressed to the semi-finals in second place with four.
Basterra has been Spain’s standout goalscorer at the tournament. The forward had four goals before the semi-finals and his hat-trick against the Netherlands took his tally to seven heading into the title clash.
Germany are appearing in a second successive World Cup final after beating Belgium in a shootout to win the 2023 edition in Bhubaneswar.
Sunday’s final will mark the German hockey team’s sixth appearance in the title match.
Spain, meanwhile, have come within one victory of lifting the trophy twice before. They finished runners-up to Pakistan at the inaugural World Cup in 1971 and lost the 1998 final 3-2 to the Netherlands.
The Spaniards’ best performance since then was a bronze medal at the 2006 edition. They finished sixth at the previous World Cup in 2023.
Germany hold a narrow advantage over Spain in the overall hockey head-to-head record.
The two European teams have faced each other 56 times, with Germany winning 25 matches and Spain 21. The remaining 10 encounters ended in draws.
Recent form, however, favours Spain.
The Spaniards are unbeaten in their three meetings with Germany in 2026. They played out a 3-3 draw in the FIH Pro League in June before Spain won the second meeting 5-2. Spain then defeated Germany 2-1 at the ongoing World Cup earlier this month.
