Puerto Rico Women’s Baseball League gets underway
The 17th season of the Puerto Rico Women’s Baseball League is underway, with the Vega Alta Maceteras and Juana Díaz Poetas remaining undefeated following the first full weekend of competition.
The 2026-27 campaign also began with a notable change, as defending champions Utuado adopted the name Montañesas, replacing their previous Tainas identity.

The Puerto Rican Baseball Federation (FBPR) introduced a new competition format for the season, dividing the eight participating teams into Northern and Southern divisions.
The Northern Division features the Utuado Montañesas, Las Piedras Artesanas, Loíza Cocoteras and Vega Alta Maceteras.
The Cabo Rojo Piratas, Guayama Estrellas del Guamaní, Juana Díaz Poetas and Santa Isabel Ponys make up the Southern Division.
Teams will play Saturday doubleheaders, with games scheduled for 18:00 and 21:00. Each game will be limited to six innings or two hours.
The seven-week regular season will conclude on 3 October 2026.

The top three teams from each division will advance to the postseason. The first-place team will progress directly to its Division Final, while the second- and third-place finishers will meet in a best-of-three semifinal to determine the other finalist.
The Northern and Southern Division champions will then compete in the best-of-five Serie Final de Puerto Rico for the national title.
The FBPR has dedicated the 2026-27 season to Edgardo José “Jockman” Ortiz in recognition of his pioneering work and longstanding advocacy for women’s baseball in Puerto Rico.
