Tourist Association of Ohrid city Biljana submits 200th b-solutions case in the Ohrid–Prespa region; 200th case milestone

The b‑solutions initiative has reached an important milestone with the selection of its 200th case. Since 2018, the initiative has supported public bodies and cross-border structures located in EU Member States, neighbouring EFTA countries and IPA countries identify legal and administrative obstacles that persist along internal EU borders and in adjacent regions. The growing number of cases shows that, despite long-standing integration efforts, border obstacles continue to affect citizens’ daily lives, limiting access to public services, environmental management, mobility and economic opportunities. The steady flow of applications from across Europe, including an increasing number from the Western Balkans, reflects strong interest in improving cross-border cooperation and supports the EU’s broader enlargement objectives by helping IPA countries align with EU governance practices.
The 200th case was submitted by the Tourist Association of Ohrid city Biljana and concerns the transboundary region shared by Albania, Greece and North Macedonia.
It addresses the difficulties faced by the authorities responsible for the joint management of the Ohrid–Prespa lake system. Variations in legal and administrative frameworks across the three countries hinder the development of common approaches to biodiversity protection, water governance and cultural heritage preservation. These challenges contribute to environmental pressures and limit the region’s capacity to pursue sustainable development.
Improving the clarity and effectiveness of cross-border cooperation mechanisms would support more coherent environmental management, reinforce local resilience and create favourable conditions for long-term socio-economic and research opportunities.
An expert appointed through the b‑solutions initiative is analysing the legal and administrative aspects of the obstacle and will provide guidance on possible ways to strengthen institutional cooperation among the involved authorities.
