BRI Contributes to International Course on Forest Restoration

The BRI team contributed to the 94th UNEP

BMUKN International Short Course, Restoring the Green: Sustainable Principles and Practices in Forest Restoration (SC94).

As part of the course programme, Prof. Tobias Cremer, Kirsten Meuer and Dr. Ana Filipa Ferreira contributed to a session on agroforestry systems, presenting two case studies that illustrate how sustainable agroforestry approaches can support forest restoration and enhance landscape resilience. The first case study focused on the Living Lab “Ackerbau(m)”, while the second presented experiences and findings from the BRI project “Integration of Wild Plants into Agroforestry Systems in Ghana”.

The presentations also highlighted the important role of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves as particularly suitable settings for forest restoration, where ecological, social and economic dimensions can be addressed in an integrated way. They further demonstrated how BRI contributes to strengthening UNESCO Biosphere Reserves worldwide.

The course brought together 21 practitioners from 21 countries of the Global South, including representatives from ministries, public agencies and NGOs.

The course is organised by CIPSEM, the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management at TU Dresden, in cooperation with UNEP, UNESCO and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). BRI’s participation also reflects its role as a UNESCO Category 2 Centre and its commitment to supporting international knowledge exchange, capacity building and the implementation of sustainable approaches within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
