Valarie Sion chasing a sixth Diamond League Final title in Brussels; aim to break 38-year-old world record

"There's some delusional part of me": Valarie Sion is chasing a sixth Diamond League Final title and a nearly 40-year-old record

The two-time Olympic discus champion arrives at the Diamond League final in Brussels chasing a sixth Diamond Trophy – and a number no woman has approached in 38 years.

Two-time Olympic discus champion Valarie Sion has won nearly everything on offer for a thrower. Two Olympic titles.

A world medal of every colour, including gold in Tokyo last year.

The American owns five straight Diamond trophies dating back to 2021, with a sixth on the line this week at the Diamond League Final , set for September 4-5, in Brussels.

Asked what was left, she had to think about it.

"I think it's every athlete's dream to be the world-record holder," Sion told Olympics.com.

The women's discus world record belongs to Gabriele Reinsch , who threw 76.80m in Neubrandenburg on 9 July 1988.

That was some 38 years ago.

“I think that's one of those things that it seems a bit elusive," said Sion. " But there's some delusional part of me, which I think all great athletes have to be a little bit crazy, that thinks it's possible . So that'd be the one thing that if I ever have all the things come together, it would be really incredible to own that piece of history ."

Sion's 73.52m, thrown on 12 April 2025, is the sixth-longest throw in history and an American record. She went 73.10m at the same meet this spring.

But that still leaves more than three metres between her and Reinsch.

A truly medal-worthy performance from V Allman. Take a look at one of their greatest moments!

"There's more I'm capable of"

At the top of her game already, Sion is definitely not one to rest on her laurels. Instead, she’s chasing perfection.

"I think really being in tune and striving for perfection is what the event is about," said Sion. " There's more I'm capable of and, for me, trying to just maximise potential is my ultimate goal ."

She does the chasing alongside her husband and coach Zebulon Sion .

"Oh my gosh, it is my favourite thing about throwing the discus," she said. "He knows the standard that I want to hold myself to and what I'm hoping to achieve."

Sion opened her Diamond League season with a win in Xiamen. A sixth Diamond Trophy is something only three other women have achieved previously: Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen , Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic and New Zealand’s Valerie Adams .

That history is important, but it’s not the only thing that keeps her coming back after years of success.

"I love competing," she said. " I love showing up and seeing what I'm capable of ."
