The twelve-time Asian champions return to basketball’s World Cup for their 18th straight appearance. Can the Koreans reach a first quarter-final since 2010?
The Republic of Korea have a tough task in the group stage of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026.
The event in Berlin, Germany, will be their 18th straight tournament, but reaching the global showpiece was harder than that streak makes it sound. The Koreans were sent to Villeurbanne for one of four World Cup qualifying tournaments staged worldwide, and it was the toughest of the lot. Six teams, but only two golden tickets on offer, with Germany and Nigeria already through as tournament hosts and African champions, respectively.
Republic of Korea lost their opener to Germany by 27 points, then beat Nigeria, Colombia, and the Philippines to take one of the two spots with a game to spare.
Korea are two-time World Cup finalists, but haven’t reached the quarter-finals since 2010, and were 10th in Sydney four years ago. In Group B, they face Paris 2024 silver medallists France, meet AfroBasket champions Nigeria again, and play world No.19 Hungary.
Here’s what you need to know about the Korean challenge.
