The two-time women’s doubles champions at Flushing Meadows will face Chan Hao-Ching and Maya Joint in the first round.

When Venus and Serena Williams stepped off the court following a first-round defeat by Czechia pairing Linda Nosková and Lucie Hradecká , 7-6(5), 6-4, at the 2022 US Open, it felt as though one of the greatest eras in women’s tennis had come to an end.

There were video tributes, celebrity sightings and an outpouring of emotion from fans, as Serena entered retirement and Venus embraced life as a solo act. The Big Apple had seen the last hurrah of the three-time Olympic champion in women’s doubles, or so it thought.

Then came the announcement that sent the tennis world into a frenzy on 1 June: Serena was back and ready to take on the world’s best. Excitement only grew after she won her first match alongside Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko at Queen’s just over a week later.

While an injury suffered by Mboko in the singles draw ultimately crushed any hopes of a fairytale ending, Williams decided to forge on. She played at the Berlin Open with Karolina Muchová , positioning herself for a wildcard entry at Wimbledon.

Williams Sisters Win Second Doubles Gold - Tennis | Beijing 2008 Highlights

Don’t miss when Serena and Venus Williams make a powerful comeback and capture their second Olympic gold medal in the women’s doubles, eight years after their first gold at Sydney 2000.

It was at the grass-court major that she finally planned to reunite with her sister to play doubles, but an injury suffered during a singles match meant she was unable to take the court. And so, their grand return came last month (August) at the Cincinnati Open.

Having lost in three sets to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns , 6-2, 1-6, [10-8], the sisters will look to win their first match together since Roland-Garros 2018 at Flushing Meadows, facing Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-ching and Australia’s Maya Joint in the first round.

Joint will be a familiar opponent for Serena, who lost to the young Aussie in her only singles match this season at Wimbledon. Chan has also beaten the Williams sisters in a doubles match on one occasion at the Beijing Open 2013, setting up a thrilling battle in New York.

The match is scheduled for Thursday, 3 September, with the start time still to be determined.
