Boredom, Anxiety, Hope: Representations of Waiting in Art - Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle

Boredom, Anxiety, Hope: Representations of Waiting in Art

As part of the Erwartung

Očekávání exhibition, we invite you to a lecture by Burg-student Anastasia Patapkina on the exhibition’s central theme—waiting and expectation as recurring motifs in art from antiquity to the present.

From Penelope’s faithful waiting and Christian images of anticipation, death, and vigil to Romantic longing and modern boredom, the selected works reveal very different ways of experiencing time.

We will look at and discuss how artists such as Andrea Mantegna, Hugo van der Goes, Georges de La Tour, Johannes Vermeer, Caspar David Friedrich, Edward Hopper found visual forms for temporality, and how art can convey the experience of waiting—a state in which nothing has happened yet.
