The Fietsschool in Flanders tackles transport poverty by building a network of local cycling schools; creates self-sustaining local structure.

The Fietsschool tackles transport poverty by building a network of local cycling schools across Flanders where children, youth, adults, elderly people and people with disabilities learn to cycle safely, close to home. By training local volunteers as certified cycling instructors, the project embeds sustainable mobility skills directly within communities, creating a self-sustaining local structure rather than a one-off intervention. Intergenerational fairness is central. Young children and youth learn cycling skills that reduce future car-dependency, while adults and elderly participants regain mobility, autonomy and access to work, education, healthcare and social participation. We want to ensure that the shift toward sustainable transport benefits every generation, not only those who already have access to green mobility options.
