U.S. superstar Allyson Felix on her LA28 comeback at 40: “Success is not just the outcome”
The seven-time Olympic champion on why making the U.S. team is not her only goal, and how showing her children her journey matters just as much.
“It’s a little bit scary to put it out there,” seven-time Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix told NBC LA in a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday (2 September), “but just attempting and trying this at 40 years old is… it’s pretty wild.”
Felix announced in April that she is returning to athletics with the Olympic Games LA28 in her sights, targeting a place in the U.S. mixed 4x400m relay pool at 42 years old. She plans to return to competition next year, according to NBC Olympics.
Making the team might be the goal, but it’s not the only purpose.
“I would love to be able to make the team, but truly showing my kids that you can go after something really hard, and success is not just the outcome, it’s everything in between, is a different experience for me,” she said.

Olympic State of Mind | Allyson Felix’s Motivation to succeed
Family is the only motivation needed for six-time gold medallist and American track star, Allyson Felix.
Allyson Felix hopes to be the homecoming queen
Felix had retired in 2022 following a home World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with 11 Olympic medals, seven of them gold. She is the most decorated woman in Olympic athletics history.
Los Angeles – her hometown – is the reason any of this is on the table.
“L.A. is where I’m born and raised and so it’s actually the only reason that this really became so interesting to me of what’s possible,” she said. “I mean to imagine being able to run in the Coliseum is just unreal and so, it’s a driving force but I’ll be there no matter what.
“So, me and my kids, you know, whether I’m running or cheering on Team USA, it is happening.”
