China’s industrial rise threatens Swiss competitiveness

10.09.2026, 13:02 Uhr Zurich - China’s industrial growth could have a greater impact on the Swiss economy than U.S. tariffs, according to a study by UBS. Experts at the Swiss bank say Chinese competitors are increasingly gaining ground in sectors such as mechanical engineering, precision engineering and medical technology.

( CONNECT ) Economists at UBS are warning about the impact of China’s industrial and technological surge on the Swiss economy. “While the economic impact of U.S. tariffs on Switzerland is expected to remain limited, China’s industrial rise is likely to bring about lasting changes to the competitive landscape for many Swiss companies,” UBS writes in a statement accompanying its latest Swiss Outlook . The pressure from Chinese competitors is further intensified by overcapacity in China and weak domestic demand.

Switzerland continues to benefit “from its specialization in innovative and high-quality products”, according to Meret Mügeli, an economist at UBS Chief Investment Office Global Wealth Management. “Nevertheless, Chinese competitors are increasingly making inroads into sectors such as mechanical engineering and precision and medical technology, which have traditionally been considered particular strengths of Swiss industry,” she says.

UBS experts say that market access and market presence are becoming increasingly important in the wake of these developments. They expect companies to increasingly build production capacity close to their sales markets to avoid tariff burdens and make supply chains more resilient. They also highlight the importance of an active trade policy, citing the recently agreed strengthening of Switzerland’s free trade agreement with China as a positive example. The agreement is expected to “further improve market access in a key strategic market”. ce
