Lonza builds new production facility in Oregon

Bend - Lonza is adding a commercial spray-drying plant to its facility in the U.S. state of Oregon. With the expansion, the pharmaceutical supplier aims to become the leading contract manufacturer for the technology in the United States. The plant is scheduled to be completed in 2029 and will create more than 80 new jobs.

( CONNECT ) Basel-based Lonza Group AG plans to build a new commercial spray-drying facility at its site in Bend , Oregon. According to a statement , the facility will feature two PSD-4 spray-drying units and will expand spray-dried dispersion (SDD) production capacity.

With the new facility, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2029, Lonza aims to offer development and manufacturing services for SDD from the clinical stage through to commercial production. The technology is used in drug development to improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble active ingredients. According to Lonza, demand for these processes is growing as an increasing proportion of active ingredients in clinical development are poorly soluble.

In addition to the two new spray-drying units, there will be upgrades to the infrastructure for solvent handling and storage. The plans also include energy-efficient utility and process systems, as well as emission-control technologies. The plant is designed to allow its capacity to be expanded in the future to meet rising demand.

Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Wienand says the investment in the Bend facility reflects the company’s conviction “that the United States will remain a leading source of pharmaceutical innovation and a key market for Lonza”. According to the statement, the expansion will create more than 80 new jobs. Lonza employs around 20,000 people worldwide and generated revenue of 3.4 billion Swiss francs in the first half of 2026. ce
