A cross-border effort to save the Arctic fox

Felles Fjellrev is a cross-border project between Sweden, Norway and Finland whose goal is to save one of our most endangered mammal species – the Arctic fox. The project has been running thanks to funding from EU Interreg Aurora. The project ends in October 2026.

As a result of long-term intensive conservation program accompanied by considerable monitoring and research efforts and a good collaboration between Norway, Sweden and Finland arctic fox is at present recovering from being critically endangered.

Felles Fjellrev is Norwegian for “everyone’s Arctic fox”, which is the starting point for the project. Arctic foxes move unhindered across national borders on the tundra and in the bare mountain regions above the tree line in Sweden, Norway and Finland and our common goal is a stronger and viable Arctic fox population spread to the mountain areas where they once lived.

International co-operation and exchange of information and expertise are required for effective arctic fox conservation results. The project is coordinated by the Norrbotten County Administrative Board and involves many local partners. Together, we complement one another and form a network with a knowledge base that is invaluable for the work of helping the Arctic fox.

During the conference we will present and discuss conservation measures done and results achieved during the Felles fjellrev - project 2024-2026, as well as the status and future of arctic fox in Norway, Sweden and Finland.
