Bangladesh and Malaysia launch Women’s Baseball programmes
The Bangladesh Baseball and Softball Association (BBSA) has launched a new Women’s Baseball programme.
The Association formed a team, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, to participate in the Women’s Baseball Invitational tournament, organised by the Baseball Federation of Malaysia from 12 to 16 August at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang, Selangor.
Head coach Hirki Watanabe (Japan) held a first-ever tryout with 40 prospective players from across Bangladesh and later selected the final roster through multiple tryouts in late spring and early summer.
Teams from Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan also participated in the event. The Malaysia team defeated Bangladesh Ansar and VDP in the championship game, 15-14, to win the invitational.
The event marks a milestone in the development of women’s baseball in Asia.
Malaysia outlined plans to create a women’s pathway beginning at U-10, followed by U-12 and U-14, feeding eventually into a senior national team. Malaysia is No. 23 in the WBSC
SHARP Women’s Baseball World Ranking .
Bangladesh is unranked. The Ansar and VDP team earned a historic first international win for any team in Bangladesh women’s baseball during the event.
International umpire Po-Chun Liu served as the home-plate umpire when the tournament opened on 12 August. She was also involved in a safe-sport programme for the Malaysian women’s team.
